Before Chicago Cubs pitchers and catchers show up at Spring Training, the team will likely be announcing a long-term contract extension with closer Carlos Marmol, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The two sides are "close to finalizing a long-term deal," the paper notes.
Marmol had a 2.55 ERA and 138 strikeouts in 77.2 innings worth of work last year. He finished off the season with 38 saves and five blown saves. In 2009, he had 15 saves and 27 holds. In his five seasons in the Cubs’ bullpen, the 28-year-old has 500 strikeouts, 61 saves, and a 3.25 ERA.
