Duda Breaks Wrist Moving Furniture

According to SNY, New York Mets outfielder Lucas Duda broke his right wrist while moving furniture, and underwent surgery on Monday. The team was reportedly considering trading first baseman Ike Davis and moving Duda to first baes, but this injury probably puts those plans on hold. A broken wrist moving furniture is one of the most Mets things ever. Duda had a .718 OPS last season, homering 15 times in 121 games, but he was a horrendous defender in right field for the team. This likely won’t cost Duda a roster spot (like a blown out knee playing basketball cost Aaron Boone a job in 2004 with the Yankees), but it’ll definitely put a damper on his attempt at a bounceback 2013 season. I’m not sure there’s a more snakebitten franchise in baseball over the last few years than the Mets. When it rains, it pours. [follow]

Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 3

Omar Vizquel hit a pair of sacrifice flies, including one in the ninth inning that lifted the Toronto Blue Jays over the free-falling Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Sunday.

Toronto entered the series in last place in the American League East but left Fenway Park two games ahead of the Red Sox. The Blue Jays have won four straight overall and six in a row against Boston.

Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia homered for the Red Sox, who have lost four in a row and 10 of 11.

Reliever Brandon Lyon (2-2) got the win and Casey Janssen picked up his 20th save.

Boston got a strong start from Clay Buchholz (11-6) but failed to give him much run support.

Buchholz allowed four runs on seven hits over 8 2-3 innings, retiring 13 straight batters before Rajai Davis blooped a single with one out in the ninth. Davis promptly stole his 41st base and took third on a single by rookie Anthony Gose, who hit his first career homer Saturday night and drove in five runs.

Embattled Boston manager Bobby Valentine came to the mound and was booed loudly, then cheered when he let Buchholz try to get himself out of the jam. Gose stole second and the Red Sox intentionally walked Kelly Johnson to load the bases for Vizquel.

The 45-year-old infielder came through with a fly ball to left that was deep enough to score Davis and end the afternoon for Buchholz.

James Loney singled to open the Boston ninth and Cody Ross nearly won it on a drive to left that was just foul. Ross ended up striking out on a pitch he felt was outside enough that he was trotting toward first when umpire Clint Fagan called it a strike.

Ellsbury flied out to deep center for the second out, then Mike Aviles hit a foul pop that catcher Jeff Mathis got under easily to complete the sweep for the Blue Jays.

NOTES: Boston activated OF Daniel Nava, who had been out since Aug. 25 with a sprained left wrist that has been nagging him this season. Nava pinch hit to lead off the eighth and grounded out. … The Red Sox are in last place in the AL East, marking the latest in a season they have held at least a share of last place since September 1997 … Boston 3B Will Middlebrooks, on the DL with a right wrist fracture since Aug. 11, turned 24 Sunday. … Toronto tied a franchise single-season record with its sixth straight win against Boston, matching the club record set from June 2-11, 1988. … The Blue Jays improved to 10-5 against the Red Sox this season, clinching their first season series victory against Boston since 2006.

Dodgers Place Uribe on DL, Call Up Herrera

LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Dodgers Monday placed infielder Juan Uribe on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist injury and purchased the contract of Elian Herrera from Triple-A Albuquerque. Uribe was hitting .250 with a homer and 10 RBI in 25 games, all at third base.

The switch-hitting Herrera was on fire for the first-place Isotopes, batting .358 (43-for-120) with two homers, nine doubles, 14 RBI and nine stolen bases in 28 games. The native of the Dominican Republic had an on-base percentage of .381 and saw time at shortstop, third base, second base, center and left field. The 27-year-old was hitting .404 against left-handers and was batting at a .409 clip (18-for-44) during the month of May. Herrera, who will wear No. 37, was originally signed by the Dodgers as a non-drafted free agent on May 14, 2003. He is expected to arrive prior to the start of the game tonight.

To make room for Herrera on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated outfielder Trent Oeltjen for assignment.

Morneau Injures Surgically Repaired Wrist

The Minnesota Twins not only lost Monday’s game to the Los Angeles Angels, but they also lost first baseman Justin Morneau to a wrist injury for at least a few games.

Morneau left Monday’s game after just two at-bats with a sore left wrist. Sean Burroughs replaced him in the seventh inning as the Twins’ designated hitter.

It’s the same wrist that gave Morneau problems during the 2011 season. He had surgery on the wrist in late September to stabilize a tendon in the back of the wrist. Morneau had to be in a cast for six weeks following that surgery. Morneau said Monday that the tendon in his wrist didn’t feel loose, but did feel sore and painful.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire didn’t provide many details to reporters about Morneau’s wrist after the game, but said that Morneau will fly back to Minneapolis on Tuesday to see Dr. Thomas Varecka, a hand and wrist specialist in the Twin Cities whom Morneau has seen before.

After the game, Morneau was hoping it wasn’t a major issue and said he wasn’t sure if he’ll get an MRI exam when he sees Dr. Varecka. Morneau added that his wrist has been bothering him since the Twins played in Tampa Bay a week and a half ago.

“It’s just sort of one of those things I was able to deal with and then it kind of got worse over the weekend,” Morneau told reporters. “There’s not really much I can do. Hopefully it’s just scar tissue breaking up.”

Prior to exiting Monday’s game, Morneau was 0 for 2. He grounded out to first base to lead off the second inning and struck out swinging against Angels starter C.J. Wilson in the fourth inning. Burroughs entered the on-deck circle for Morneau in the sixth inning but was left on deck after Josh Willingham popped out for the final out. Burroughs, batting for Morneau, led off the seventh inning with a groundout to first.

Morneau said his wrist hurt more Monday when he swung and missed as opposed to making contact. Morneau swung and missed twice during his second at-bat in the fourth inning, including strike three on a 93 mph fastball.

“It didn’t feel very good, that’s for sure,” Morneau said. “Hopefully we get some answers (Tuesday).”

After appearing in just 69 games during the 2011 seasons with numerous injuries including his wrist Morneau had played in all but two of the Twins’ games this season, although just four of those games came at first base. Minnesota’s lineup Monday was also without catcher Joe Mauer, who had a day off for the first time all season. Mauer took a foul ball off his left knee in Sunday’s series finale against Kansas City and did not play Monday in Anaheim.

Through Monday’s game, Morneau is batting .230 with nine RBI and four home runs in 74 at-bats. After bouncing back from a concussion that he’s dealt with the past two years, Morneau’s recent injury is certainly a disappointing setback.

“I’m not going to play worst-case scenario yet. I’ve got to stay positive and hope for the best,” Morneau said. “Hopefully it’s just part of the process or something that will just be a couple days. . . . I’ll stay optimistic for now until I hear anything different.”

Mariners C Adam Moore Out with Broken Wrist

Seattle Mariners catcher Adam Moore has suffered a broken right wrist after blocking a ball in the dirt during a spring training game.

The Mariners announced Thursday morning that Moore would be out an unspecified amount of time after suffering the injury in Tuesday’s game against Cincinnati. Moore blocked the pitch and remained in the game but arrived at the ballpark on Wednesday in pain. X-rays were taken and revealed the injury. He will be placed in a cast and his timetable for a return will be determined after he sees a hand specialist.

It’s another stroke of bad luck for Moore, who missed most of last season after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee. Moore played in just two games in 2011.

Boston’s Carl Crawford to Miss Opening Day?

a7493 crawford carl Bostons Carl Crawford to miss opening day? When Boston Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford started increasing his hitting activity right around New Year’s, he experienced soreness in his left wrist, Sox GM Ben Cherington said, according to MLB.com. It wasn’t’ going away and has been there in the past so Crawford opted for surgery on Tuesday, which may keep him from being with the team on opening day in April, the site notes.

Cherington is optimistic that Crawford will be with the team for “the bulk of the season,” according to the site. “We’re not going to put an exact timeline on it,” Cherington said. “We expect him to be hitting at some point during spring training and then expect him to be in position to return to play at some point very early in the season.”

Mark DeRosa Signing with Nationals?

57d1f mark derosa signing with nationals Mark DeRosa signing with Nationals?

The Washington Nationals are about to add some depth with the signing of super-utility player Mark DeRosa, a source tells Fox Sports. The 36-year-old will sign a one-year deal and join recent addition Mike Cameron on the bench, the site reports.

DeRosa has been with the San Francisco Giants for the last two seasons, but has played sparingly due to two surgeries on his left wrist. He only appeared in 73 games for the Giants. In fact, he hasn’t appeared in more than 71 games in a season since 2008.

In the 47 games he played in last year, though, he hit .279 with 12 RBIs and one stolen base. After coming off the disabled list on Aug. 5, DeRosa hit .367 in 57 plate appearances.

“It’s not like I’m looking for an everyday job, even though [playing] will be my goal going to the yard every day,” DeRosa said earlier this offseason, according to Fox. “I just think I can be a difference-maker on a team, not only on the field, but in the clubhouse. I’ve been on a lot of winning clubs in my 13 years.”
