Beltre Blasts Rangers Past Orioles

Adrian Beltre hit three home runs, including two in a nine-run fourth inning, and had five RBI in the Texas Rangers’ 12-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.

Beltre hit his first homer leading off the second against former teammate Tommy Hunter. He connected again off Hunter for a two-run shot with none out in the fourth. He then hit another two-run drive with two outs while facing Kevin Gregg.

Mitch Moreland hit his first grand slam in the fourth, when the Rangers sent 12 batters to the plate. He matched Beltre with a career high-tying five RBIs.

The power surge supported a solid effort by Derek Holland. The left-hander pitched seven innings, giving up three runs and five hits. He struck out five and walked three.

Hunter (4-8) allowed eight runs on eight hits – three home runs – in three-plus innings. Hunter, who spent parts of four seasons with the Rangers, was acquired by the Orioles along with first baseman Chris Davis in a 2011 trade-deadline deal for right-handed reliever Koji Uehara.

With his first home run, Beltre became the ninth third baseman with 10 seasons of at least 20 home runs. Beltre has had 23 multihomer games in his career.

The Rangers gave Holland (8-6) plenty of support with the big inning.

Josh Hamilton, who matched a major league record with four home runs May 8 against the Orioles at Camden Yards, started the inning with a single and scored on Beltre’s drive to left.

Nelson Cruz and Michael Young followed with singles before David Murphy’s run-scoring double. A walk to Geovany Soto set up Moreland’s grand slam.

Three batters later Beltre hit his second homer of the inning, driving in Hamilton, who walked.

Beltre, who entered the game hitting .244 in his last 31 games, is hitting .462 (6 for 13) in his last three.

Beltre, Murphy, Young and Ian Kinsler each had more than one hit. Shortstop Elvis Andrus was the only starter without a hit for the Rangers, who improved to 13-8 in August and maintained a five-game lead over Oakland in the AL West.

Murphy has five multihit games in his last six and is hitting .519 with four doubles, one home run and seven RBIs during the stretch. Since July 24 he leads the majors with 13 doubles.

Nick Markakis went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for Baltimore.

NOTES: The Rangers said before the game that right-hander Yu Darvish would not make his next scheduled start on Thursday as a precaution because of tightness in his right quadriceps. Team officials said Darvish is expected to make his next start on Tuesday. . Orioles catcher Matt Wieters left the game after the sixth inning because of a right shoulder contusion sustained on a foul tip in the second inning. X-rays were negative. … Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Jim Thome, on the disabled list with a herniated disk, is pain free and will begin baseball activities on Thursday. . Uehara completed a rehabilitation appearance at Triple-A Round Round with no complications and will pitch again Friday.

Uehara Hasn’t Changed Anything with Approach

SURPRISE, Ariz. While Texas right-hander Koji Uehara has had a solid start to spring training, he doesn’t think he’s pitching any differently than he did last season.

“It’s pretty much the same,” said Uehara. “It’s nothing new I am aware of. I’m feeling good.”

Uehara, who was the subject of trade speculation coming into spring training, doesn’t appear to be going anywhere now. The Rangers haven’t had any conversations over the last several days about dealing him and general manager Jon Daniels said Tuesday that he expected Uehara to be with the club this season.

Manager Ron Washington has been impressed with the movement Uehara has on his fastball, something that was missing in 2011. Uehara had a 1.72 ERA in 43 appearances with Baltimore last year but was 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA with the Rangers and was left off the World Series roster after posting a 33.75 ERA in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

ANDRUS TAKING IT EASY

Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus was on the field for part of the team’s practice Saturday but isn’t expected to participate in every drill when the club begins full-squad workouts Sunday.

Andrus had a wart removed from his right heel Thursday.

“It’s getting better for sure but it’s going to be sore

for the next few days,” Andrus said. “Monday or Tuesday I’ll be ready to go. It was exactly the same thing I had last year. It wasn’t that bad like last year.”

Andrus has been in Surprise for nearly a week and doesn’t expect the wart to be an issue.

“I’ve really worked hard and back home (in Venezuela) too,” he said. “It’s not going to be a problem missing a couple of days.”

ALL ACCOUNTED FOR

Michael Young was in camp Saturday and just like everyone else, he was asked about the addition of Yu Darvish.

His thoughts?

“We’re excited about him being here,” Young said. “We know how good he’s capable of being. Anything that comes with that we’re all for that. It’s another great pitcher to add to the group we already have. We know the success he’s had in Japan and we’re going to welcome him with open arms.”

Spring training for the Rangers has become a breeding ground for distractions in the last few years, with Darvish being a huge story this year and the uncertainty surrounding Young the big story last year.

Young doesn’t think any of those things deter the team from getting its job done.

“It’s about baseball,” he said. “It’s always about baseball. Those other things are just small things that everyone always says is a distraction. They’re not going to distract us one bit.”

READY FOR THE SPEECH

Texas manager Ron Washington said he hadn’t thought about whether or not he’ll talk to his team about Game 6 of the World Series when he talks to them Sunday morning.

Staying healthy this spring will be one of the priorities for Washington.

“Stay healthy as usual,” Washington said. “Our focus should be going out here and getting prepared to play the 2012 season. That’s going to be the message.”

Rangers Not Dealing Koji Uehara

f12b6 uehara koji Rangers not dealing Koji UeharaThe American League champion Texas Rangers tried to ditch reliever Koji Uehara via trade all offseason but couldn’t seem to work out a deal for the fella who, after having a good season with the Baltimore Orioles and Texas, completely imploded in the postseason, compiling a 33.75 ERA in 1.1 innings worth of work.

It appears that the team will be heading into the season with Uehara still on the roster (and that isn’t such a bad thing). “There are always some deals in the spring, moves here or there,” GM Jon Daniels said Tuesday, according to MLB.com. “But we’re ready to go with this group of guys. I have no moves planned or anything like that.”

Uehara, who struck out 65 in 85 innings last year, has another year left on his deal and will be paid $ 4 million for the season.

Rangers Trading Koji Uehara to Athletics?

9d180 uehara koji Rangers trading Koji Uehara to Athletics? The Oakland Athletics are likely busy celebrating their signing of Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes, but the team might soon be adding another player to the roster.

ESPN reports that the A’s are in conversations with the Texas Rangers about trading for reliever Koji Uehara. Oakland is also talking to free-agent reliever Mike Gonzalez, the site notes.

Uehara went 2-3 with a 2.38 ERA and 85 strikeouts over 65 innings pitched for the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers. However, he had a rough postseason, letting in five runs in 1.1 innings pitched, earning him a 33.75 ERA and forcing the Rangers to not place him on the World Series roster.

Rangers Trading Koji Uehara to Toronto?

7bbbc uehara koji Rangers trading Koji Uehara to Toronto?Reliever Koji Uehara may be headed out of the Lone Star State. The Texas Rangers have discussed trading him to the Toronto Blue Jays, according to reports from Japan, MLB.com reports. Uehara’s contract, which has him making $ 4 million next season, allows him to block trades to six teams.

Uehara joined the Rangers at the trading deadline after being dealt from the Baltimore Orioles, where he went 1-1 with 13 holds and a 1.72 ERA. His stint in Texas wasn’t as successful. He went 1-2 there with a 4.00 ERA. He made three appearances in the postseason and let in five runs, which earned him a suitable-for-framing ERA of 33.75. He was left off the roster for the World Series. After all, the batting average against him in the postseason was .556. Ouch.

Since joining the bigs in 2009, the 36-year-old has a 5-9 record with a 3.13 ERA and 188 strikeouts.

Koji Uehara Refuses Trade to Blue Jays

81d52 uehara koji Koji Uehara refuses trade to Blue JaysThe Texas Rangers tried to trade reliever Koji Uehara to the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday but the 36-year-old native of Japan said he wouldn’t go, according to ESPN. “Uehara has a limited no-trade clause that includes six teams and Toronto is one of those,” the site notes.

Uehara is set to make $ 4 million this season and the Rangers continue to try and trade him elsewhere, the site reports.

A source to ESPN has it that Uehara just didn’t want to move his family from Baltimore (where he debuted in 2009 and was traded from last summer) to Toronto.

While Uehara played well with the Orioles, striking out 62 in 47 innings pitched and maintaining a 1.72 ERA, he didn’t do as well in Texas, where he had an ERA of 4.00 and famously let in five runs in 1 1/3 innings of postseason work before being left off the World Series roster.

Uehara went 2-3 with a 2.35 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 65 innings pitched.
