Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera Have Awkward Celebration (VIDEO)

Torii Hunter is the new guy in town.  And while he has only been around for 22 games, he needs to get acclimated to a proper celebration of a Miguel Cabrera, especially since he hits in the slot above him in the order.  Cabrera took Luis Avilan offering deep to right field Sunday.  After he crossed home plate, Hunter went for the high five as Cabby went for the pound.  Hunter went for the bro hug as Cabby turned to the dugout.  They almost kissed each other on the cheek.
It was a mess.  Here it is:

Justin Verlander Says He Would ‘Absolutely’ Be Accepting of Openly Gay Teammate

Torii Hunter made headlines a few months ago when he said having an openly gay teammate would be ”difficult and uncomfortable.” One of his fellow Detroit Tigers feels very differently. Justin Verlander told CNN’s Carol Costello on Tuesday that he would “absolutely” be accepting of an openly gay teammate. The Cy Young winner also took it a step further, saying that he doesn’t believe the Tigers locker room would be threatening place for a gay player. “Yeah, I don’t see why not, given the right situation, and a team that’s a family atmosphere, and I feel like we have that atmosphere here,” Verlander said. “I don’t think one of our players would be scared to come out. We got 25 guys, it’s a family, and our goal is to win a World Series. What your sexual orientation is, I don’t see how that affects the ultimate goal of our family.” An active player in the four major professional sports has yet to come out as gay, but Verlander says he’s certain there are gay players on current m

Torii Hunter’s Son, Notre Dame Recruit, Breaks Leg

Detroit Tigers center fielder Torii Hunter will likely have to wait a little longer to see his son play for Notre Dame.

Torii Hunter Jr. , a wide receiver who committed to Notre Dame in September, broke his left femur while running a route on the second day of practice for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

Hunter Jr. underwent surgery on Wednesday and is expected to need six to eight months to recover, according to what his father told ESPN.com.

“He’s distraught right now,” Hunter told ESPN.com. “He’s never had an injury before. I told him he’ll bounce back. I know he will. He’s seen me fight through injuries so he knows it can happen. You just have to work hard.”

Hunter Jr. posted an X-ray of his completely fractured femur on his Twitter account, @THunterJr.

In his senior year, Hunter Jr. had 71 receptions for 1,235 yards and 14 touchdowns for Prosper (Texas) High. His team went 10-3 and made it to the third round of the Class 4A Division II state playof

Hunter: Gay Teammate Would Be ‘Uncomfortable’

Society has progressed when it comes to accepting people for who they are regardless of sexual preference, but sports locker rooms are still a place that have a ways to go. Boxer Orlando Cruz recently revealed that he is gay, but there has yet to be an NFL, MLB, or NBA player who has come out while he was playing. Houston Texans running back Arian Foster feels people are more accepting these days and doesn’t think it will be much longer before a football player comes out. Athletes who were considering making such a bold move might think again after reading Torii Hunter’s comments. Hunter is a four-time All-Star and has played in the majors since 1997. He was considered a clubhouse leader with the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels, and he told the Los Angeles Times that having a gay teammate would be “difficult and uncomfortable.” “For me, as a Christian … I will be uncomfortable because in all my teachings and all my learning, biblically, it’s not right,” Hunter told the Times. “It wil

Hunter Sounds Off on Hamilton Signing

If we are to believe Detroit Tigers new OF Torii Hunter, he was told by Arte Moreno that there wasn’t money to spend on him or anyone else this offseason. Following the signing of Josh Hamilton by the Los Angeles Angels, Hunter took a shot at the Angels owner on Twitter. Hunter signed a very [...]

Detroit Tigers Rumors: Catcher Edition

Much has been made of the Detroit Tigers adding Torii Hunter to the roster and how much that will improve the offense and defense of a team that was so frustratingly close to winning it all last year. Indeed, Hunter will provide a huge piece to the Tigers’ puzzle, but he doesn’t cure all of the ills.
Most people with an opinion have the Tigers’ 2013 Opening Day lineup looking something like this:

Austin Jackson – CF
Torii Hunter – RF
Miguel Cabrera – 3B
Prince Fielder – 1B
Victor Martinez – DH
Andy Dirks – LF
Jhonny Peralta – SS
Alex Avila – C
Omar Infante – 2B

Assuming Jackson and Dirks can put up repeat performances from a season ago that top 6 will be as fearsome as any other team. As confidently as Jim Leyland can pencil in that top 6 though, slots 7 and 8 raise a lot of questions.
Alex Avila needs to do more of this in 2013
I covered the Jhonny Peralta/Stephen Drew issue in this article. Here, we will discuss the major concerns that come with the catching position.

Free Agent Napoli Seeks 4-year Deal

The Mike Napoli Victory Tour started in Seattle, moved on to Boston and will continue in Texas and perhaps parts unknown. Pretty impressive for a guy who isn’t a regular catcher, appeared in only 108 games last season and batted just .227, albeit with an .812 OPS.

Napoli, 31, is an interesting free agent, a catcher for most of his career, a part-time first baseman in the past three seasons, an offensive force no matter where he plays. Adding to the intrigue: He would create a domino effect — or not — for each of his three known suitors:

* Mariners. It’s no secret: The M’s need offense, and they’re also seeking to add experience and leadership. Torii Hunter would have been ideal, but he signed with Detroit. Napoli, in the end, also might choose a more competitive club.

The Mariners, though, are perhaps the best bet to give Napoli the four-year deal that he is seeking. And if Napoli wishes, he easily could rationalize such a move, in the grand tradition of free agents past.

For one thing,

Tigers Should Deal for Andrus

DETROIT What now for the Tigers?

Signing right fielder Torii Hunter was a great start, but my guess is that there will be at least two more significant deals or signings.

Deciding what to offer pitcher Anibal Sanchez — whose interest will heighten after top pitcher free-agent Zack Greinke signs — and making at least one significant starting lineup move appear to be in the offing.

Much of the talk has been about pursuing an everyday left fielder. But neither trading for Justin Upton — who looks to be staying with the Diamondbacks — nor signing free agents such as Cody Ross or Ryan Ludwick make much sense.

What makes perfect sense is putting together a deal to acquire Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus. He would plug the clubs most glaring weakness — a porous infield — and also happens to be available.

The Tigers are interested in free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew, but he wouldn’t make the impact that Andrus would. What’s clear is that the Tigers are looking to upgrade at shortstop and trade Jh
