Father, Daughter Banned from PNC Park After Fight That Included Security Guard Losing Part of Finger

The Pirates are known for a couple of things: One, they have a horrible team each year. Two, they have a lovely business going, thanks to a low payroll and league-wide revenue sharing, which lets them make a profit even if fans don’t show up to the games that the Pirates aren’t investing in winning anyway. That’s what makes it especially endearing that the Pirates have managed to wrangle another $ 28,000 — and from fans who couldn’t have enjoyed their visit to PNC Park all that much, either. Rachel George, 21, and her father, Christopher, 50, need to come up with $ 28,000 in restitution to the Pirates after an altercation last year that led to a security guard losing part of his finger, according to WTAE Pittsburgh. As part of the ruling, both father and daughter have been banned from PNC Park for life, and both will serve two years of probation. Rachel George will also have 30 days of house arrest. The pair was on their first visit to PNC Park when Rachel George was told to stop smok…

Liriano Agrees to Revised Contract

Yes, Francisco Liriano will be a Pittsburgh Pirate.

The free-agent left-hander and the Pirates have finalized their two-year deal, agreeing to adjusted terms after Liriano suffered a broken right arm over the holidays, according to major-league sources.

Liriano, 29, reached preliminary agreement with the Pirates on a two-year, $ 12.75 million contract shortly before Christmas. He still could earn that entire sum but will assume more risk under the revised terms, sources said.

If Liriano misses time next season because of an ongoing problem with his right arm, his first-year salary will be reduced, according to a source. His second-year salary will remain the same as long as he is not sidelined because of the same specific injury.

Liriano was healthy all of last season, going a combined 6-12 with a 5.34 ERA for the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox. He is 53-54 with a 4.40 ERA lifetime.

Jeff Karstens Returns to Pirates

Pitcher Jeff Karstens is returning to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The right handed pitcher was non-tended by the Pirates in late Novemeber but is back on a one-year deal.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Karstens will make $ 2.5 million under terms of the new contract.
Last season Karstens was 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 90 2/3 innings of work. Karstens missed time with shoulder, groin and hip injuries last season. He has spent the last five seasons with the Pirates.
It is unclear if the signing of Karstens will result in the team turning away from Francisco Liriano.

Pittsburgh Pirates Land Francisco Liriano

Well, they finally did it. After an entire off-season in search of starting pitching, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Friday that they have come to terms with free agent pitcher Francisco Liriano on a two-year contract worth $ 14 million. Clearly the Pirates needed to add a starting pitcher. Before signing Liriano, the Pirates were projected [...]

Knobler: Tigers Not Interested in Joel Hanrahan

The Tigers are in need of a late-inning reliever or closer and have a young, solid starting pitcher that they are likely to trade. The Pirates need a solid starting pitcher and have a late-inning reliever or closer that they are likely to trade.
Because of those two things, many have wondered that a deal involving the Pirates’ Joel Hanrahan and Tigers’ Rick Porcello makes sense for both teams. But Danny Knobler of CBS Sports reports otherwise.

I still think the Pirates should be making a pretty strong push for Porcello, but if the Tigers are not interested in Hanrahan, it does make it a little harder for the Pirates to put together a package for him.

Pittsburgh Pirates Make Questionable Roster Decisions

They are minor moves, but they can have major ramifications. More than anything, however, the smaller moves the Pittsburgh Pirates have made over the past few months simply don’t add up. In fact, they show a lack of an organizational plan. At the trade deadline, the Pirates traded outfielder Gorkys Hernandez for first baseman Gaby [...]

Pittsburgh Pirates: Who Is to Blame? Part 1 of 3.

In 2011, the Pittsburgh Pirates set a Major League baseball record for the worst finish by a team that was in 1st place in their Division as late in the season as they were.  The club finished 72-90, for their 19th straight losing season.
Here in 2012, the Pittsburgh Pirates set another Major League record, becoming the first club in history to finish below .500, after being 16 or more games above .500 at one point during the season.  The club finished 79-83 for their 20th straight losing season- once again besting their own record for most consecutive losing seasons by a franchise in North American sports history.  (Like 2011, the Pirates would’ve made the playoffs and lifted the losing seasons’ yoke had they simply played .500 baseball down the home stretch of the season.)
That’s 3 colossal records that no franchise should want any part of…and yet the Pirates own all 3.  Given such catastrophic season endings, long-suffering Pirates’ fans should’ve seen HUGE changes this offseason…

Pittsburgh Pirates: Announcement Timing Becoming Predictable

Over the past few years, fans paying close attention to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ timing of their announcements have detected a pattern:  When the Pirates have negative or controversial news to break, they tend to wait until huge national news stories surface, so that they can slide their news in under the radars of a rightfully disenchanted fan base.
Originally, the Pirates’ strategy was outright coverup, shown by their one-time “secret” contract extensions of then-manager John Russell and GM Neal Huntington, deals which were never mentioned to fans until the media exposed them months later.  An irate backlash ensued, fueled by President Frank Coonelly’s comments that such inner workings should not be of the fans’ concern, despite the questionable achievements of both Russell (who was fired in 2010) and Huntington.
Trust us, Neal: We were surprised too.
Shifting strategy, the Pirates now release critical stories coinciding with national-level events.  Fans first saw this when the Pir…
