Roy Halladay’s return to the Philadelphia Phillies is uncertain after undergoing surgery. The Phillies right hander had a 8.65 ERA on the season prior to the surgery.
Halladay had a bone spur in his shoulder removed and his torn rotator cuff repaired on Wednesday. Halladay will rest for the next six to eight weeks before resuming a throwing program according to Mike Axisa of CBS Sports.
At the end of the season Halladay will become a free agent.
The Phillies are also without pitcher John Lannan who will also miss six to eight weeks with a quad strain near his knee. On Wednesday the team signed veteran pitcher Carlos Zambrano to a minor league deal.
At 19-22 and only 3.5 games back, the Phillies are well without striking distance of the cooling Atlanta Braves.

Red Sox Reliever Joe Hanrahan to Undergo Surgery

Boston Red Sox reliever Joel Hanrahan confirmed on Saturday morning that he would undergo season-ending surgery.
Hanrahan’s flexor tendon is torn off the bone and he will meet with Dr. James Andrews next week for surgery. The surgery will keep Hanrahan out of action for six months and there is no guarantee that the right hander will not require Tommy John surgery.
The Red Sox acquired Hanrahan from the Pirates in December. He will become a free agent at the end of the season. In nine games this season Hanrahan notched 4 saves but had a 9.82 ERA and a 2.18 WHIP.
Andrew Bailey, who Boston had hoped will fill in as the teams closer, is unlikely to return from the disabled list on Tuesday. Bailey may end up needing a rehab assignment for his forearm injury. Junichi Tazawa will fill in at closer in his absence.

Neftali Feliz Throws for First Time Since Surgery

ARLINGTON, Texas Playing catch for a baseball player doesn’t seem like that big of a deal.

It was for Texas right-hander Neftali Feliz Friday.

Feliz played catch for the first time since he had Tommy John surgery last August. He was at Rangers Ballpark as part of the team’s winter pitching camp.

Feliz said he was a little nervous playing catch but he’s cleared another hurdle in what he hopes is a return to the Texas pitching staff sometime this season.

“I feel strong,” Feliz said. “I feel good. I’ve been doing everything the team wants me to do, lifting weight, getting stronger and doing what they want. It felt good.”

Feliz is still a long way from being an option for the Rangers. The target for his return is sometime after the All-Star break. He understands the process in coming back from the surgery is a long one.

“They make the decisions on when I’ll throw more often,” he said. “They’ll make it when the decision is right.”

Alex Rodriguez Retiring After Surgery?

I’m hip to retirement T…
Alex Rodriguez has not lived up to his mega contracts with the New York Yankees. His production is at an all time low, and once again A-Rod is scheduled for hip surgery, which will sideline him for God knows how long. Our source out of A-Rod’s camp has informed us, Alex is considering hanging it up, depending on how his recovery goes. “Alex is fully aware he has become a huge liability for the Yankees. The benching during this past postseason was a real eye opener for him. He doesn’t want to hold back the Yankees any longer, and he’s made enough money where he feels completely comfortable walking away” said our source. I think A-Rod would be far more respected if he chooses this path. It’s the least he could do for Yankees fans.-TO

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. Brian McCann hasnt let shoulder surgery keep him from perfecting his skills.

Not baseball.

That will have to wait until his shoulder is healthy.

McCann considers himself the best Madden player in the Atlanta Braves clubhouse, so hes had plenty of time with the controls the past couple of weeks.

“As soon as (his three-month son, Colt) is asleep, the Madden comes on, McCann said. Im on top of my game right now.”

Video football was put on hold Saturday afternoon while McCann hosted the fourth annual Brian McCann Rally Celebrity Softball Game on Saturday at Coolray Field, home of the Triple-A Gwinnett Braves. The Rally Foundation raises money for childhood cancer research.

“Its a huge part of what we get to do,” McCann said. “We have a platform to speak, and my wife and I chose this foundation to support. It keeps getting bigger and better.

“We wanted to do something to do with kids. We met some of the kids, and that was it. We wanted to be a big part of it
