In his one season with the Texas Rangers, Mike Napoli definitely made his presence known, batting .320 with 30 homers and 25 doubles.
Now the team is “optimistic” that it can sign the 30-year-old catcher to a new multiyear deal, according to Fox Sports.
Napoli arrived in Texas after a whirlwind five days in January when he was traded from the Los Angeles Angels (where he holds the record for all-time homers by a catcher) to the Toronto Blue Jays and then to the Rangers. He will be a free agent after next season if the two sides cannot agree on an extension now.

Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez have played together on the Detroit Tigers since 2005. Now the veterans are free agents and Guillen reports that neither one of them is planning on retiring, despite Ordonez ending his year by refracturing his right ankle, the same injury that ended his 2010 season. It also appears that neither one of them will be back with the Tigers next season, either.
MLB.com reports that Guillen says the 37-year-old Ordonez has had surgery on the ankle and will start rehabbing in South Florida soon, according to MLB.com.
The 36-year-old Guillen told the site that “this will be his first offseason with his full health in a few years” and that he plans to keep on playing. “Why not?” he asked the site. “If you feel you can play, why not?”

Rafael Betancourt has gone 7 for 8 in save opportunities since taking over for the injured Huston Street and found that he’s actually enjoyed the intensity, the Denver Post reports.
“I love the pressure,” Betancourt said, according to the Post. “I love knowing that when I go in that I have a chance to win the game for the team. If they want me to keep doing this, I would be fine with that.”
And because of that, execs from other teams expect the Rocks are ready to put Street on the trading block this offseason, according to the paper.
Street, who closed out 29-of-32 save chances this season, is due $ 7 million next year.

Florida Marlins second baseman Omar Infante spent three years playing for the Atlanta Braves before being shipped over during last offseason as part of the Dan Uggla deal. The word is that after one season in the Sunshine State, Infante will sign a two-year deal with the team worth $ 8 million after passing a physical Tuesday, according to MLB.com.
The 29-year-old is making $ 2.5 million this year. He’s hit .279 with seven homers, eight triples, and 24 doubles.
He came into the league with the Detroit Tigers back in 2002 but only played 18 games in the bigs. He has played more games so far this season (146) than he has in any previous year.

Florida Marlins second baseman Omar Infante would like to stick around in the Sunshine State, but he doesn’t want to do it for whatever the Fish initially offered him. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has it that Infante rejected the team’s first contract-extension proposal.
“One day we talked about it,” Infante said, according to the paper. “I think they’re going to wait because up to now we haven’t talked about it again. They said they wanted me and made me a proposal. I didn’t want it, so we decided to wait until after the season to start negotiating.”
The 29-year-old Infante is hitting .279 with 22 doubles, seven triples and five homers in his first season with the Marlins.

The Colorado Rockies have claimed 32-year-old lefty pitcher Wandy Rodriguez from the waiver wire.
The Houston Astros have been trying to unload Rodriguez and the $ 36 million owed him through 2014.
“He’s a gritty little competitor,” Rockies manager Jim Tracy said of Rodriguez, according to the Post.
Rodriguez is 9-9 with a 3.31 ERA for the worst team in the majors this season.

This is Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Jeremy Hellickson’s first season as a starter in the big leagues and the St. Louis Cardinals have apparently been noticing his good work.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the 24-year-old “is the pitcher the Cardinals most covet in a potential deal.”
This year, Hellickson has started 16 games and gone 8-7 with a 3.21 ERA and 68 strikeouts. Last year, he went 4-0 in 10 appearances, though only four of them were starts. He also had a blown save in one of his relief appearances in 2010.

New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has had a sore right knee since June 19 when he was injured on the basepaths against the Chicago Cubs.
Even though the knee has been improving, it may be enough to keep him out of this Tuesday’s All-Star game, according to the New York Post.
The paper notes that Rodriguez looked better Wednesday than he has in recent days, hitting two singles and diving to catch a pop foul.
Rodriguez said he will likely attend the game even if he decides not to play in it, the paper reports.
