MLB Game Picks – Saturday: April 27, 2013

After a horrendous 15-27 pick performance after the first three days of this week, there was a long, uphill climb back to respectability. And after an 11-3 night last night (yet another postponement), the picks have climbed to .500 for the week at 41-41 and are within a successful Saturday of finishing in the black.

But as long as I am feeling good about yesterday, I can still laugh at picking the Braves over the Tigers. I gave Anibal Sanchez’s lifetime stats against the Braves, which were horrible and based the pick on that. But then he goes and strikes out seventeen, breaks a Tigers record and pitches the best game of the season. Congrats, Anibal. Nice game.

Matching Sanchez on the plus side was my man, Jordan Zimmermann, who pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout for the Nationals. The Cincinnati Reds, who have a pretty great lineup, have been one-hit by the Nationals for two consecutive nights.

Will the Reds rebound? Let’s take a look along with all the rest…

Ventura Plans on Managing Through His Contract

Robin Ventura made it clear Sunday: The first-year manager plans on being around for the remaining two years on his contract with the Chicago White Sox.

He raised a few eyebrows Saturday when asked if he could ever see himself managing as long as a Walter Alston or Tommy Lasorda. Ventura said he couldn’t and was just hoping to get through this season.

He clarified his answer when asked again Sunday, saying he plans to be around for two more years if the White Sox want him.

Chicago, in first place for 117 days this season, trailed Detroit by two games in the AL Central before Sunday’s play.

Revived Ian Kennedy Faces Mets Saturday

Ian Kennedy had a career year in 2011, and he’s finally starting to show that form.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are seeking consistency of their own as they try to get back into the NL West race.

Kennedy looks to win a season-high third consecutive start by continuing his success against the visiting New York Mets on Saturday night.

Kennedy (8-8, 4.20 ERA) a 21-game winner last season, setting personal bests in wins, ERA (2.88), strikeouts (198) and innings pitched (222) while emerging as Arizona’s ace. The right-hander has struggled locating that consistency in 2012, going 4-2 with a 4.84 ERA in nine home starts.

He was 11-2 with a 2.64 ERA at Chase Field last year.

Kennedy, though, is starting to put together a strong stretch after winning back-to-back starts. He was impressive in Monday’s 6-3 win over Colorado, yielding two runs with seven strikeouts in eight innings.

That performance came five days after he fanned seven and allowed one run in eight innings of a 7-1 victory at Cincinnati.

“I went out there and just wanted to do it like we did it last year and just pound the zone,” Kennedy said after his latest outing. “Overall, I feel like I’m locating my changeup better, that it’s down instead of up.”

Kennedy has had little trouble against the Mets (48-52), winning all three starts behind a 3.50 ERA. That includes two home games while giving up two runs in 12 innings.

Arizona (50-50) could use another strong performance as it tries to overcome a 3 12-game gap on second-place Los Angeles and 5 12-game deficit to West-leading San Francisco.

The Diamondbacks re-established some momentum after winning for the sixth time in eight games by beating New York 11-5 on Friday following a 3-1 defeat to open this four-game set.

Chris Young is 8 for 22 with three doubles, two homers and eight RBIs in the last seven games after getting two hits and plating two runs Friday. That stretch has raised the center fielder’s season average 17 points to .223. However, he’s 0 for 16 with eight strikeouts against Mets scheduled starter, also named Chris Young.

New York’s tailspin is showing few signs of ending, dropping 13 of 15 to fall 11 12 back of NL East-leading Washington.

Young (2-4, 3.91) will try to begin reversing that stretch by getting his first win in five starts. The right-hander is 0-3 with a 4.70 ERA in four outings, but he has a 2.77 ERA in his last two while being backed by three total runs.

Young overcame a shaky first inning Monday when he allowed two runs, regrouping with six shutout innings after that and seven strikeouts overall in an 8-2, 10-inning defeat to Washington.

He’s made nine starts since returning from major shoulder surgery that kept him out for over a year.

“It’s a good outing, but it’s not good enough,” Young told the team’s official website Monday. “I’ll keep building on it. I hope to get stronger as the season progresses. But it’s just tough to evaluate that stuff right now.”

Young is getting his first start against the Diamondbacks since allowing one hit in six innings of a road victory with San Diego in 2010. He’s 2-2 with a 3.67 ERA in six starts at Arizona.

Holliday Expects to Play Saturday

ST. LOUIS — Thought to possibly be done for the season, outfielder Matt Holliday will instead likely be back in the Cardinals’ starting lineup Saturday afternoon against the Chicago Cubs.

Holliday, out since suffering an inflamed tendon on his right middle finger while taking a swing in the on deck circle Sept. 13, took a full round of batting practice before Friday night’s game at Busch Stadium and said he would likely be available to pinch-hit.

Asked what he needed to accomplish during Friday’s session, Holliday said, “Just that if I can take my normal swing so if I get out there I don’t have to think about it.”

The slugger apparently was able to take his full swing, hitting a number of home runs before declaring to reporters, “I’m going to play tomorrow.”

Getting a healthy Holliday back in the lineup would be a big boost for the Cardinals in their final five games. They entered Friday’s game trailing the Atlanta Braves by two games in the National League Wild Card race with six to play.

Holliday has dealt with a number of injuries this season, starting with an emergency appendectomy that cost his seven games during the first week of the season. He has also spent time on the disabled lsit for a strained left quad, missed two games after tweaking his back lifting weights and had to leave early on Aug. 22 when a moth got stuck in his ear.

The five-time All-Star is hitting .295 with 22 home runs and 74 RBIs in 120 games this season but was hitting just .227 in his past 29 games before injuring his finger.

Allen Craig filled in admirably in place of Holliday, going 8 for 21 with three home runs and six RBIs in his past five games. Skip Schumaker started in left field Friday night.
