Pirates Catcher Doumit on Way Back to Bigs

ATLANTA ? Catcher Ryan Doumit (fractured left ankle) was moved from Single-A Bradenton to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, as he continues to rehab.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Doumit will alternate catching seven innings and being the designated hitter for four games, then catch nine innings Saturday.

He’ll pinch hit Sunday, then begin catching back-to-back games, going nine innings.

? Shortstop Chase d’Arnaud said he suffered a chip fracture in his right pinky Sunday while sliding into third base. He finished the game, but the finger swelled. Throwing and gripping the bat was painful Monday. D’Arnaud said it was “tremendously better” Tuesday, and he was available to pinch hit.

? Hurdle said the Pirates will have an updated rehab plan for pitcher Ross Ohlendorf by Wednesday.

? With Alex Presley on the disabled list with a left thumb contusion, Hurdle said Andrew McCutchen would be his second choice to bat leadoff after Xavier Paul. Hurdle said he doesn’t want to bat McCutchen leadoff, but he also wouldn’t commit to Paul getting regular time in left field.

“We’re going to play it one game at a time, give him some more at-bats, see where he can take them and see how we do as a team,” Hurdle said. “We’ll look at the matchups and go from there.”

? The Braves’ Chipper Jones didn’t start Tuesday night against the Pirates because of a quadriceps injury and said he probably will pinch hit for the next couple of days. He was brought in to pinch hit against the Pirates in the late innings Tuesday. The Braves also made Jordan Shafer a late scratch with a thumb injury, moving center fielder Nate McLouth to the leadoff position and using Eric Hinske in left field.

Hunter Pence and Astros Go to Arbitration

In the final arbitration case of the season, the Houston Astros and outfielder Hunter Pence  have gone in front of an arbitrator, according to the Associated Press.  Pence asked for .9 million while the Astros countered with a .15 million.  Pence made .5 million in 2010.
The third case marks Major League Baseball’s lowest since the process started in 1974.  Most of the 119 players that filed for arbitration settled with the exception of Jered Weaver (lost his arbitration case with the Angels) and Ross Ohlendorf (won his arbitration case with the Pirates).
A decision on Pence’s salary is expected Saturday.
In 2010, Pence hit .282 with 25 home runs and drove in 91 RBIs.
