Toronto Blue Jays pitcher J.A. Happ had to leave Tuesday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays on a stretcher after being struck in the side of the head by a line drive by Rays batter Desmond Jennings in the second inning.

Happ was taken to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition while undergoing some tests. We wish Happ a speedy recovery.

J.a. Happ Hit in Head by Line Drive

In Tuesday night’s Blue Jays-Rays game, Toronto starting pitcher JA Happ was hit in the side of the head by a line drive off the bat of Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings. Happ was taken off the field on a stretcher with his head immobilized, and he offered the crowd a wave of his hand as he left the field. Video of the incident is below the jump, but I must warn you that it’s graphic. There was no immediate update on Happ’s condition, and we truly hope his injury isn’t serious. [follow]

Series Recap: Rays Split Series with the White Sox

The Rays are leaving Chicago with a four-game split against the White Sox.  After losing the first two games of the series, the Rays won the following two by a combined score of 18-7. In the two wins, Ben Zobrist contributed with four RBI and a home run in their 10-4 win Saturday night. Evan Longoria also pitched in going 5-for-10, keeping his batting above .300 so far. Headline of the series has to be that of David Price earning his first win Sunday.  Price pitched seven innings, gave up three runs, walked two, and struck out nine. Rays improve to 12-13 on the season. The post Series recap: Rays split series with the White Sox appeared first on The Bay Cave.

How Badly Did Marty Foster Screw the Rays?

At the end of last night’s Rays-Rangers game, home plate umpire Marty Foster called Ben Zobrist out on a pitch that was (clearly) a ball, as you can see in the video above. Also in the video above, you can see the reactions from Zobrist and Rays manager Joe Maddon, who were clearly displeased at the awful call. But while the call was clearly a disgrace, and Foster won’t even have to publicly defend his call (thanks MLB!), just how much of a screwjob was it?

During Zobrist’s at bat against Joe Nathan, he didn’t swing the bat once, and was thrown just one pitch that was in the strike zone. Take a look at the strikezone map.

The pitch in question is labeled as #6 on here, and was clearly outside while also being at the bottom edge of the zone. There’s no questioning it was an awful call, and that Foster screwed up. Nathan closed out the game by striking out Zobrist while throwing one pitch that was even a borderline strike. That takes skill.

Tampa Bay Rays Mascot Holds Up Controversial Sign, Organization Apologizes

On Wednesday during the Tampa Bay Rays game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Rays mascot was handed a controversial sign and held it up and took photos with it.  The sign made light of Steve Irwin’s death, when a Manta Ray stinger pierced his heart in 2006.  The Tampa Tribune provided some background on the incident: The sign was made by Lloyd Johnson, 29, an Army veteran from Pinellas Park who served in Iraq and is now attending St. Petersburg College. He brought it to Wednesday night’s game and during the seventh inning handed it Raymond, who held it up for photographs. In an email, he said he’s a “big Rays fan” and Irwin fan, but “I can also take a joke.” Johnson said Raymond “obviously thought it was funny because, at first, he stood up on the chairs and held it up for literally 3 seconds, either realizing what he was doing or when he saw the reaction from some of the fans, and got down and tried to hand it back. “Raymond did read the sign and even used his finger to point to …

Roberto Hernandez Wins Final Rotation Spot for Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays have awarded Roberto Hernandez the fifth and final spot in their rotation to start the season. Hernandez signed a $ 3.25 million contract with the team this offense which includes nearly $ 2 million in additional incentives.
Hernandez made just three starts last season while his identify as Fausto Carmona was exposed to be a fraud.
The now 32-year-old right handed Hernandez had a 5.33 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP this spring. He was awarded the rotation spot over Jeff Niemann.
Expectations should be low on Hernandez who has not had an ERA below 5 since 2010 and has only two of his seven big league seasons with a sub 5 ERA.
