Cliff Lee Throws Seven Scoreless in Win Over D’backs

Left hander Cliff Lee had another strong outing on Saturday as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1.
Lee tossed seven scoreless innings while scattering six hits while picking up his fourth win of the season for the visiting Phillies. Lee’s ERA dropped to 2.86 after the outing.
Jonathan Papelbon avoided trouble in the ninth to persevere the win for Lee and notch his sixth save of the year
Last season Lee did not pick up his fourth win of the season until September 1 thanks largely to a scuffling offense behind him.

Is This the Beginning of the End for the Phillies?

For the Philadelphia Phillies to compete in the NL East with the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves, the general presumption was that starting pitching would have to shoulder the burden.  Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels — arguably the best starting top three in MLB — would have to pitch at their best for the Phillies to contend. That became an even greater responsibility when general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. failed to add an impact hitter to the team’s everyday lineup.  But now that Halladay is on the disabled list with a shoulder injury (please pardon that pun in the first paragraph), where does that leave the Phillies’ chances this season?  Halladay was placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation. But the fear is that this could be a longer-term injury for the right-hander, who will turn 36 years old next week. As my colleague Jaymes Langrehr detailed in an earlier post, Halladay has been demonstrating signs of concern for at least the p…

Phillies Place Halladay on DL with Shoulder Inflammation

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Roy Halladay has been placed on the disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder.
Halladay has been dealing with discomfort in his shoulder since his April 24 start against the Pirates but did not inform the Phillies of any problems until after Sunday’s outing.
On Sunday Halladay allowed nine runs in 2 1/3 innings raising his ERA to 8.65 on the season.
Halladay will visit Dr. Lewis Yocum this week for a examination of his right arm.
“We’ll see how it plays out in the next few days. As soon as I can get in to see him we’ll get that done and try to get you guys information as soon as we can.” said Halladay after Sunday’s game, via the Philadelphia Inquirer.
With Halladay going to the disabled list the Phillies have called up left handed pitcher Joe Savery from Triple-A. Saver, 27, has been pitching as a reliever for Lehigh Valley. He will likely return to the minors once the Phillies decide on a replacement for Halladay.

Adding Ruiz Without Aderall: What Will Phillies Get?

Carlos Ruiz returns to the Phillies today and he will do so without his long lost friend Aderall. Although it might be a fun drug at parties or to cram for a big exam for college students, Aderall doesn’t exactly scream baseball.

Aderall doesn’t improve bat speed, it doesn’t add distance on home runs, and it doesn’t help players rebound quicker from injuries. But what it does provide might be the biggest benefit of all for a catcher: it improves concentration.

Think about the life of a catcher for a moment.

Phillies Outfielder Ben Revere Writes ‘Pray for Boston’ On Glove, Makes Incredible Catch (Video)

Ben Revere made arguably the catch of the year at Great American Ball Park on Monday, but that’s not what will endear him to fans in Boston.
In the wake of the Boston Marathon explosions, the young Phillies outfielder attached a strip of tape with the words “Pray for Boston” to his glove when Philadelphia took on the Reds in Cincinnati. He then used that glove to rob Todd Frazier of an extra-base hit with a sprawling grab in center field and completed the highlight-reel play by doubling up baserunner Jay Bruce at first.
Check out both the catch and the tribute below.

Butler Has Grand Day with Seven RBI Against Phillies

The Kansas City Royals won on Sunday thanks to the bat of Billy Butler. The 26-year-old drove in seven runs in a 9-8 win against the Philles.
Philadelphia plated four runs off of Kansas City starter James Shields in the first but the Royals cut the lead in half with two in the third.
Billy Butler took it from there.
In the fifth inning Butler hit a grand slam off of Phillies starter Cole Hamels. An inning later he laced a two-run single off Chad Durbin.
Alex Gordon drove in a insurance run in the eighth. It was needed as the Phillies mounted a comeback of their own in the ninth. The Royals needed three pitchers to get though the eighth but held on for a 9-8 win.

Roy Halladay: Phillies’ Ace’s First Start Causes Experts Heads to Explode

You’ve heard the stats by now. On a rainy Wednesday night, Roy Halladay debuted for the 2013 season. And, well, it wasn’t great. Despite nine of the ten outs he made being strike outs, Halladay was roughed up for five runs in just 3.1 innings. Any hitter who didn’t strike out got on base 90 percent of the time against Halladay. Yeah, not good.
The reaction is, which has become almost comical at this point, is the real story here. People who follow the Phillies were already worried about Halladay’s first start before the game was even played, and not just because Cole Hammels got beat on opening day. They said Halladay had a “rough spring” and “lost his cutter” at one point. And this after battling a sore shoulder for most of 2012.
Then, of course, the start didn’t go well, and everyone freaked out. ESPN had a scout analyze Halladay’s outing (with the scout calling Halladay a pitcher who looked like “a journeyman” against the Braves), breathlessly searching for answers for the disaster
