Baltimore Orioles: Showing Too Many Pitches?

Baltimore Oriole hall of famer Jim Palmer appeared on MASN’s O’s Xtra postgame show with Amber Theoharis and Rick Dempsey following last night’s 3-2 loss to New York. Palmer said that in his opinion Alfredo Simon showed too much of his repetoire in the first inning of last night’s game, in which New York took a 1-0 lead. I have to be very careful here; farbeit from me to disagree with one of the greatest pitchers of all time, and a hall of famer at that. If you’re talking pitching with the likes of Jim Palmer, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Don Sutton, et al, you’re talking to the right guys. However I suppose my point would be this; isn’t the object to get the hitters out? It was fairly obvious that Simon didn’t have his crispest stuff in the first inning last night, yet he managed to get out of it with only one run.
I want to be clear here; I’m not necessarily disagreeing with Jim Palmer here. I understand what he’s saying in th…

Jeremy Guthrie: All-Time Oriole Great?

Could Jeremy Guthrie soon be considered among the all-time great Oriole pitchers? Not yet, but perhaps soon. Here are the top ten pitchers in Oriole history in terms of WAR (for these purposes, WAR as calculated by Baseball-Reference.com)
Report Created on Baseball-Reference.com
There he is, #10 all-time.If Guthrie posts his average season in 2011 (3.7 WAR), that will put him above Scott McGregor and Mike Cuellar and right behind Milt Pappas. Another decent season would put him in the neighborhood of Dave McNally.Obviously, he won’t reach the elite heights of Mike Mussina or Jim Palmer but I was quite surprised to see how well he measured up against the likes of Oriole legends Cuellar and Boddicker already.Guthrie is under team control for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Did you ever think you would see Jeremy Guthrie in the Ori…

Canseco Writes New Book, but Who Is Going to Read It to Him?

I stole that joke from Pops Derwood.Yes, Offbase readers, Jose Canseco is at it again. After his first two books “Juiced” and “Vindicated” talked about steroids and singing armadillos (speculation, I haven’t read either book), Canseco is set to release his third book, titled “The Truth Hurts”. But that’s no fun. So here’s a list of titles he should’ve used*:1. “Punching Danny Bonaduche Hurts”2. “To Be An Oriole: How I Plan On Leading The American League in Home Runs In 2025″3. “Me And Ozzie’s Conversations With The Mailbox”4. “The Day I Wore This Shirt”5. “Bat Speed: My Day At Dave & Busters”6. “F.P. Santangelo’s Gonna Get Hurt”7. “Of Softball Home Run Derbys & Men”* Source: CSWPUJCGHHHN (the committee to send a wheelbarrow to pick up Jose Canseco and get him the help he needs)
