Dwight Gooden should be known as the greatest pitcher ever for the New York Mets. He was simply tantalizing when he arrived as a rookie in 1984, and immediately became the most dominating pitcher in the entire league. His first three seasons are almost unparalleled and he topped it off with a World Series ring in 1986. There is a ton of excitement around rookie Matt Harvey at the moment, but he doesn’t even come close to Doc. Instead of celebrating the championship moment with this teammates and the fans of the Mets, he was in the grasp of the addiction that would deteriorate his career. Shortly after the Mets defeated the Red Sox in Game 7, Gooden called his father, then his drug dealer. Cocaine and booze, and his own personal hell is where he celebrated the great victory. He watched the team’s parade, all by himself from his home, as he chronicles in his autobiography, Doc: A Memoir. Here is an excerpt, via the NY Post: “As my teammates road through the Canyon of Heroes, I was alo…

When I was 18, I started dating my first real girlfriend (girls on the back of cereal boxes tend to be a bit unresponsive once mom throws the box out, after all). Things started out great; we got along swimmingly, spent every waking moment together, and started making plans to move in together. But, after some time, the cracks in our armor began to show. She tended to slack a bit when it came to accepting my meager requests to not be so irrational. Things got a bit heated, but I accepted it because of what seemed to be before the steady decline in our relationship. I looked past it all because, after all, there were obviously things I really did like about her. Unfortunately, these delusions never really quelled just how bad things really were.
My first relationship has some striking parallels to my “relationship” with one Ike Davis. Starting off as one of the more highly touted of a crop of up-and-coming first basemen in the latter first decade

New York Mets starting pitcher Jon Niese has been diagnosed with a lower right leg contusion. While x-rays on Niese’s leg came back negative it is questionable whether the 26-year-old will make his next start.
Niese was hit in the right leg with a comebacker off the bat of Mark Ellis of the Dodgers.
The Mets are aleady without Johan Santana for the year after it was deamed that he needed shoulder surgery. Shaun Marcum is dealing with a neck issue while Aaron Laffery was claimed off of waivers by the Blue Jays earlier in the day.
Niese, who was 2-1 with a 3.80 in his first four starts, was charged with one run on three hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings.

If the New York Mets are going to have any chance in the NL East this season they will need a look of good luck. Count the wife of Mets pitcher Jon Niese in the pile of fans with lucky charms.
“I’m the superstitious one,” said Leah in a recent profile by The New York Post. “I have lucky underwear — they’re Mets underwear.”
The couple got married in January after more then three years of dating.
Leah went on to talk about her first encounter with her future husband.
“He was in a cast from his ankle up to his waist,” Leah recalled. “We just started talking, and he just seemed like a down-to-earth and really sweet guy. We just took it from there.”
Leah says she tries to attend every game that her husband pitches. Last season he finished the year with a 13-9 record and a 3.40 ERA.
The first game of the MLB regular season occurs on Sunday night. The Mets will play their first game on Monday at 1:10 pm EST with Niese on the mound.

To add something to the “this really isn’t news, but it’s a distraction at the very least” category, the wife of New York Mets Opening Day starter Jon Niese revealed in an interview with the New York Post that on Opening Day, and during all of Niese’s starts in 2013, she plans on wearing her “lucky underwear”, a set of Amazin blue panties. Seriously. When Jon Niese pitches tomorrow on Opening Day against the San Diego Padres, his gorgeous new wife, Leah, will be wearing Amazin’ blue panties — just as she has faithfully done at every game pitched by the lefty love-of-her-life. “I’m the superstitious one,” said Leah, 23. “I have lucky underwear — they’re Mets underwear.” So, it’s come to this for the Mets: on the weekend before Opening Day, the top story about the team in one of the city’s most popular newspapers is about the attractive wife of the Opening Day starter and her choice in underwear. To be fair, the story is essentially a ro…

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Dillon Gee stayed positive despite his tough spring for the New York Mets.
The type of outing he had Monday against the Atlanta Braves should make him feel even better.
Gee pitched six scoreless innings and struck out seven as the Mets topped the Braves 7-4. Gee had allowed 11 earned runs in his previous two starts and missed the second half of last season with a blood clot in his right shoulder.
“I’ve never gotten caught up in spring training,” Gee said. “I am just trying to be aggressive. To do well in a big lineup like I did today makes me feel good.”
Even though Gee allowed five earned runs in four innings in his last outing against the Houston Astros, Mets manager Terry Collins felt the right-hander turned a corner during that rocky outing.
“He got hit in that last inning, but he finished strong,” Collins said. “He came back to the dugout after it was over and said, I’m back.’ He showed that today.”
Gee went 6-7 with a 4.10 ERA
