The Tampa Bay Rays got clutch hitting late in the game to beat the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, 10-7 in 10 innings. Starting pitcher Chris Archer threw nine pitches in is one inning of work. He recorded a strike out and gave up one walk (to Joe Mauer). Jake Odorizzi also pitched well as he threw seven pitches in the second inning to record three outs.. But the real story was the Rays’… The post Rays need extra innings to be the Twins appeared first on The Bay Cave.

In an unsurprising move, the New York Yankees have agreed to terms with outfielder Matt Diaz. There had been some speculation in recent days that the Yankees would go out and sign Diaz as he would help them fulfill their need for a right-handed hitting outfielder. Many people believed that the Yankees would attempt to [...]

The acquisition of Josh Hamilton gave the Angels what they wanted, but it also left the Angels with a little problem: between Peter Bourjos, Mark Trumbo, and Kendrys Morales, they had too many good players for too few spots. This was, as they say, a nice problem to have, and the Angels also felt they had a need for another innings-eating starting pitcher. So in a move surprising only because it went down between two teams in the same division, the Angels and Mariners have exchanged Morales and Jason Vargas, straight up. With one move, the Angels solved two perceived problems.
The whole trade is simple. It’s easy to understand, like an example transaction in Trading 101. The Angels had too many bats and too few starting pitchers, so they traded a bat for a starting pitcher. The Mariners wanted a bat more than they wanted to keep one of their starting pitchers. Morales didn’t fit in one place and he does fit in the other. Morales has one year left until free agency, and he’s projected…

The Tigers are in need of a late-inning reliever or closer and have a young, solid starting pitcher that they are likely to trade. The Pirates need a solid starting pitcher and have a late-inning reliever or closer that they are likely to trade.
Because of those two things, many have wondered that a deal involving the Pirates’ Joel Hanrahan and Tigers’ Rick Porcello makes sense for both teams. But Danny Knobler of CBS Sports reports otherwise.

I still think the Pirates should be making a pretty strong push for Porcello, but if the Tigers are not interested in Hanrahan, it does make it a little harder for the Pirates to put together a package for him.

The Minnesota Twins are desperately in need of starting pitchers. Recently the Twins have engaged Francisco Liriano about a return to the team. Lirano was traded from the Twins to the Chicago White Sox midway though last season.
Liriano, 29, finished last season with a 5.34 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.
The Twins have had Liriano on their roster for each of his seven big league seasons. After starting his career off with high expectations, Liriano never returned to form following Tommy John surgery after the 2006 season.
The Kansas City Royals are another team who are believed to be interested in signing the left hander.

INDIAN WELLS The Dodgers are probably unlikely to trade for a starting pitcher this winter and might have to address that need in the free-agent market, General Manager Ned Colletti said.
Collettis assessment was based on conversations he had with other teams at the general managers meetings, which started Wednesday.
Asked about what hes learned in the last 24 hours about the market for pitching, Colletti said, Ive done a little more trade-wise, whats possible or impossible — more impossible than possible.
The Dodgers are looking to add a No. 2 or 3 pitcher to compliment ace Clayton Kershaw.
Of the pitching market in general, Colletti said, Its not massive. Its probably unlikely trade-wise. There are probably three or four different pitchers we have interest in. Well see. Its still fairly early in the process. But pitching is most of our concentration right now.
The Dodgers are believed to be interested in free agent pitchers Zack Greinke, Hiroki Kuroda and Anibal Sanchez.
Colletti said the free-agent
