It has been a while since Russell Martin played thirdbase or second base yet he will try to play shortstop during the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
Martin, 30, has never played a game at shortstop.
“It’s not an easy decision,” Martin said. “I’m doing it because I feel I owe it to the Canadian people to compete for my country, even if I have more of a world citizen-type attitude where I feel like we’re all in it together overall. It’s fun to compete. It makes for good baseball. People play for the passion.”
Martin says the Pirates have been supportive of him playing in the WBC even as the catcher attempts to play shortstop.
On team Canada’s roster he will join Justin Morneau, Brett Lawrie, Michael Saunders, John Axford, Jesse Crain and Jameson Taillon.

New York Yankees’ free agent catcher Russell Martin could be headed west to the Texas Ranger.
According to Buster Olney’s tweet, the Rangers are considering Yankees free agent Martin as an option behind home plate.

Russell,29, hit .211 average, 21 HRs and 53 RBIs last season for the Yankees but struggled in the postseason going 5-31 in 9 games.
The free agent catcher made $ 7.5 million last year is looking for a multi-year deal with more money.

Since the New York Yankees did not make a qualifying offer worth $ 13.3 million to catcher Russell Martin makes him a free agent, and gives GM Brian Cashman another vacancy to fill.

One would believe that Martin is the Yankees first-choice to bring back, as he is familiar with the pitching staff and got two big endorsements from ace CC Sabathia and Derek Lowe at the end of the 2012 season.
Sabathia had this to say about Martin via the New York Post, “I think it’s important. He’s been a great addition to our team, on and off the field. That’s not in my department, though. But we’ll have to just wait and see what happens. But he’s been great for us.”
And Lowe, who probably won’t be back next season in the Bronx but has plenty of street cred made a great point about Martin’s value, “There’s not many catchers that are going to hit you 20 home runs and drive in I don’t know how many he had, call a great game, throw guys out…

There is a new trade rumor circulating about Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton, and it involves the Atlanta Braves. Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers has stated that he’s not currently shopping Upton, but he will listen to offers, and it would appear that he’s already getting interest from a few teams. New York Yankees catcher Russell Martin will be a free agent at year’s end and the 29-year-old would rather sign an extension with the team than be searching for a deal next winter. But the two sides are “far apart” at this point, according to the New York Daily News.
“It’s too early to say if we’ll be able to do something,” Matt Colleran said Thursday, the paper reports. “What they want to do is not something we want to do, and what we want to do is not something they want to do. But we’ll continue talking.”
GM Brian Cashman said that he is “willing to make a commitment to Russell Martin,” but only “under the right circumstances.
Martin batted .237 with 18 homers and 65 RBIs last season.

All-Star catcher Russell Martin and the New York Yankees have agreed to a one-year, $ 7.5 million contract to avoid salary arbitration.
The deal, announced Tuesday, was $ 100,000 under the midpoint between the $ 8.2 million he had asked for in arbitration and the $ 7 million the Yankees had offered when proposed salaries were exchanged last week.
Martin also can earn performance bonuses.
Martin hit .237 with 18 homers and 65 RBI last year for the Yankees, who signed him after the Los Angeles Dodgers failed to offer a contract. He had a $ 4 million base salary and earned $ 1,375,000 in performance bonuses.
He is eligible for free agency after next season.
Lefty reliever Boone Logan is the last Yankees player still in arbitration.

The Detroit Tigers are looking to make some deals this offseason and have Atlanta Braves third baseman Martin Prado at the top of their list, according to Fox Sports.
Right behind Prado, though, is Los Angeles Angels infielder Maicer Izturis, sources tell Fox, to help fill the crucial holes for Detroit: second base, third base and the leadoff spot.
The 31-year-old, switch-hitting Izturis “has filled all of those roles over an eight-year career,” Fox notes, but this season marked the first time in his career he played more than 120 games in a major-league season. Fox notes, though, that the Tigers have Ryan Raburn, Brandon Inge and Don Kelly to share time with Izturis if he can’t play every game.
Next year is the final year of Izturis’ deal and he’s scheduled to make $ 3.8 million, the site notes. Last year, he hit .276 with 35 doubles and five homers in 122 games.

The trickle of “on the block” rumors is turning into a stream, and one of the more recent ones down the, um, pipe (is that fine or a mixed metaphor?) is that the Atlanta Braves are “gauging interest” in multi-positional hitter Martin Prado and pitcher Jair Jurrjens, at least in part to free up salary. The Braves have a good collection of young pitchers, which is why they were able to execute a (partial) salary-dump by sending Derek Lowe to Cleveland. Jurrjens looks like the next out the door given his injury issues, dubious peripherals, and arbitration status. However, the more intriguing player might be infielder-turned-outfielder Martin Prado.
According to our own Matt Swartz’s projected arbitration salar…
