Often times, the sequel doesn’t quite live up to the hype of the original, but when it comes to Mike Trout…I don’t think anyone is complaining about his second full season in the Majors. Tuesday night, Trout added another line to his already full resume when he hit for the cycle during a 12-0 romp against the Seattle Mariners. And in the process, became the first player to do it this season and just the seventh member of the Los Angeles Angels to accomplish the feat. Trout struck out in the first…but that was clearly the only hiccup in his game. The 21-year-old (oh, did anyone mention he’s the youngest player to hit for the cycle in the American League?) then singled in the third, tripled in the fourth, doubled in the sixth and, you guessed it, hit his ninth home run of the season in the eighth. All in all, the “Miville Meteor” went 4-for-5 with five RBI, raising his batting average to .293. In case you were wondering, the last Angel to hit for th…

Right fielder Josh Hamilton has been scratched from the Los Angeles Angels’ lineup for Saturday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
According to a club spokesman, it’s ”Just a day off, to recharge.” Hamilton originally was scheduled to bat fifth, but was replaced in right field by Mark Trumbo – who had been slotted as the designated hitter. Instead, Albert Pujols was shifted from first base to DH and Brendan Harris was inserted as the first baseman.
Hamilton is batting .210 with five home runs and 12 RBIs in 167 at-bats during his first season with the Angels, who signed the five-time All-Star to a five-year, $ 125 million contract in December. The 2010 AL MVP is 6 for 31 in his last eight games with one RBI – a home run on Tuesday – and seven strikeouts.

Let Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Hank Conger serve as an example as to why defensive shifts don’t always work.Conger essentially legged out a bunt single in the eighth inning of Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles despite tripping while running to first base. No, I’m not kidding.Watch as Conger laid down a bunt toward the left side of the pitcher’s mound, proceeded to sprint toward first, but somehow got his feet tangled up, and suffered a terribly inopportune tumble. However, the Orioles had shifted so far to the opposite side of the infield that Conger still had time to rise to his feet and make it to first base safely. If you listen closely, you can almost hear the sound of “Yakety Sax” playing softly in the background as the whole play develops.Via Hardball Talk

When Albert Pujols left the St. Louis Cardinals in favor of the 10-year, $ 254 million contract he received from owner Arte Moreno of the Los Angeles Angels, most in St. Louis felt that Pujols left the Cardinals because he felt the Cardinals were not showing him enough respect by not offering a similar 10-year deal.
As it turns out, according to a report by Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, Pujols might not even honor and fulfill the entire 10-year contract he received from the Angels.
Pujols told DiGiovanna that he would walk away from the game once he felt that he could not compete at a high level any longer.
“God has given me ability and talent, but the day I feel like I can’t compete any more on this level, I’m not going to embarrass myself. I’m going to walk off. Whether that’s next year, two years from now, only God knows.”
At this point, Cardinals’ fans really are not too angry with Pujols any longer. The organization has locked up Y…

It’s hard to believe that Josh Hamilton is Public Enemy #1 in Arlington, but the new Los Angeles Angels outfielder isn’t expecting a warm reception when he returns to Texas the first time to face the Rangers. After all, as Hamilton told Gerry Fraley of The Dallas Morning News, they weren’t exactly celebrating his career which included an MVP season and two World Series appearances in his final game of the season: “I got booed when I played there,” said Hamilton, alluding to the response to his final game as a Ranger. “Why wouldn’t I get booed when I play there as an Angel?” This has led to his Angels teammates putting together a pool on whether or not he gets more boos or cheers when they play in Texas for the first time this season. Of course, Hamilton didn’t do himself any favors after he signed with the Angels when called Dallas-Fort Worth area ‘not a true baseball town.’ He attempted to backtrack from those comments while interviewing with the Dallas media on Thursday when the R…

Texas Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan believes his club can still contend for the American League West crown without slugger Josh Hamilton.
Hamilton signed a five-year, $ 125 million deal in the offseason with the division-rival Los Angeles Angels.
“You just don’t replace a talent like that, and we all know that,” Ryan said via ESPN Friday before the club’s first Cactus League game. “But also, there’s a dimension that’s brought to the ballclub that very few players, if any other player in baseball, would bring. It’s so unique and unusual that you can’t put other players in that category.”
Ryan considered Hamilton a key component for a team that won the AL pennant in 2010 and 2011.
“Josh had a big impact on our organization, and we wouldn’t have gone to two World Series without him,” Ryan said.
Hamilton signing with the Angels was a tough day for the Rangers organization.
“I think the ‘pucker factor’ went up considera…

Baseball is supposed to make sense. It’s why we count stats, to objectively quantify positive and negative performances. Of course we know there’s always some pesky team that comes along and spoils all the fun, the pageantry, the beauty of having the best teams on paper meet in a matchup for the ages. For example, in 2013 the Los Angeles Angels and the Dodgers are supposed to meet in the first ever Freeway World Series between the Southern California rivals. They’ve spent the money, they have the star power, heck they even have the red vs. blue theme. But there are twenty-eight other teams in baseball that are aiming to disrupt that beautiful plan. More specifically, there are a few teams that hardly anyone is expecting to knock off the Angels and the Dodgers, but also the Braves, Nats, Reds, Giants, Rangers, Tigers and Yankees. These are 2012 Baltimore Orioles and Oakland A’s. They’re the 2011 Virginia Commonwealth University Rams basketball team and the 1980 Men’s U.S. Oly…
