Despite Struggles Cubs Will Keep Darwin Barney at Major League Level

The Chicago Cubs have no plans to send struggling second basemen Darwin Barney to Triple-A. Barney is hitting a disappointing .153/.274/.264 on the season.
Chicago did not expect Barney, a career .257 hitter, to be a large portion of their offense this season but his current problems at the plate can not be over looked even with gold glove caliber defense.
According to Gordon Wittenmyer Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said prior to Saturday’s game against Washington that the Cubs would keep Barney with the big league club. Hoyer went on to say that Barney had “earned a lot of playing time.”

Allen Webster Named by Scouts As Best Pitcher in International League, Flashes 97 MPH Fastball (Video)

Red Sox fans attending Game 2 of Sunday’s day-night doubleheader will be lucky enough to watch Allen Webster’s major league debut.
Webster is the top pitcher in the International League, according to scouts that Nick Cafardo has spoken to. He flashes a 97 mph fastball and a “tremendous” changeup that he doesn’t waste. Webster was acquired in the deal that sent Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers.
Webster has a 0.90 ERA in Pawtucket so far this year with 12 strikeouts in 10 innings. John Farrell said he’s been up to 85 to 90 pitches in starts so far.

Yankees Sign Lyle Overbay to Minor League Deal

Lyle Overbay was released by the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday morning, hours later he signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees.
Overbay, 36, had been trying to win a bench spot with the Red Sox. Had the Red Sox not released him the first basemen could have opted out of his contract or reported to Triple-A to start the season.
After Overbay was granted his release he quickly signed a contract with the division rival Yankees. The Yankees have a glut of injured players including first basemen Mark Teixeira. Overbay would figure to gather some early season starts at first while Teixeira is out.
Last season Overbay spent time with Arizona and Atlanta. He finished the year with a .259/.331/.397 line while hitting two home runs in 131 plate appearances.

Rays Send Wil Myers to Minor League Camp

The Tampa Bay Rays sent right fielder Wil Myers to minor league camp on Saturday. The move was expected as the Rays will attempt to delay his service time from beginning which could eventually earn him Super Two status.
Myers spent the 2012 season at Triple-A batting .304 with 24 home runs and 79 RBI in 99 games last season.
Acquired from Kansas City in a trade for James Shields, Myers was ranked as the No. 4 prospect by Baseball America. This spring he did not hurt his stock as he hit .300 (9-for-30) with a triple, three doubles and an RBI in 15 games during Grapefruit League action.
The Rays also sent pitchers Juan Sandoval, J.D. Martin and Will Inman to minor league camp. All three were invited to spring training as non-roster invitees.

Brennan Boesch Signs Major League Deal with Yankees Worth $1.5 Million Plus Incentives

It didn’t take long for Brennan Boesch to find a new home.
Two days after being released by the Tigers, Boesch has signed a major league deal with the Yankees, according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman.
The Yankees are in desperate need of some reinforcements, and Boesch will give them a left-handed hitting outfielder with a reputation of being a streaky hitter. Given the thin market, though, Boesch seems like a logical choice for the Bronx Bombers, especially since the 27-year-old has enjoyed at least some major league success in the past.
Boesch’s deal is reportedly worth $ 1.5 million plus incentives. According to Heyman, Boesch could earn $ 600,000 in incentives in intervals based on the number of at-bats (100 to 350 at-bats) he receives.
The Red Sox, Mets and Astros were among the other teams to consider Boesch. It’s likely he’ll be given plenty of opportunities with the Yankees, though, as Curtis Granderson is currently sidelined with a broken forearm.
Boesch hit .240 with 12 home…
