Matt Kemp Gives Fan Autographed Ball, More

During last weekend’s series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants at AT&T Field, Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp went above and beyond to make the day of one Dodgers fan seated alongside the field of play following one of the games. After giving the young fan — who apparently is undergoing a battle related to a disability — a signed baseball, Kemp went a step further, giving him a hat. Then his jersey. Then his shoes. Awesome. A description of the amazing moment that transpired between Kemp and the fan in the YouTube description of a video uploaded on Monday and discovered by Vin Scully is My Homeboy and published on Tuesday: Matt Kemp is sucha great person. He came over after the game and made one of my best friends night : ) he’s fighting a tough battle and this was sucha great gift by Matt Kemp ! I’ll never forget this. Quentin, Kemp Seperated by Police After Game

San Diego Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin did not take too kindly to being hit by a pitch from Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke. Quentin charged the mound and after a benches clearing brawl the Dodger pitcher was left with a broken left collarbone.
Things did not end there though.
Los Angeles Times reporter Dylan Hernandez tweeted that after the face-to-face confrontation, Kemp told Quentin, “We’ll see, b!tch.”
Kemp was wearing a three-piece suit and black leather backpack during the postgame fracas, which was caught through the lens of Associated Press photographer Lenny Ignelzi.
Police eventually separated Kemp and Quentin but the two teams start a three game series in Los Angeles on Monday.
“I think Carlos Quentin went to Stanford, something like that?” Kemp told reporters after the game, which the Dodgers won, 3-2. “I heard there’s smart people at Stanford. That wasn’t too smart. Greinke didn’t do anything wrong. That stuff happens in the Minor Leagues. It doesn’t happe…

Kemp to Get MRI; Out for Giants Series

Matt Kemp is not in Saturday’s lineup against the Giants. Kemp isn’t completely recovered from a collision with the outfield wall last week and should be considered day-to-day.

According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, Kemp will miss the remainder of the Giants series and undergo a contrast MRI on his shoulder Saturday. The severity of the injury isn’t yet known. Shane Victorino will continue to start in center field in Kemp’s absence.

VIDEO: Kemp, Mattingly Ejected in Explosive Fashion

Your browser does not support iframes.

In Thursday’s Dodgers-Pirates game, home plate umpire Angel Campos ejected Dodgers star center fielder Matt Kemp from the game while Kemp was sitting on the bench for arguing balls and strikes. Kemp struck out to end the first inning, and his ejection came four pitches into Andre Ethier’s at bat to lead off the second.

After Kemp was tossed, he came off the bench along with Dodgers manager Don Mattingly, who came out to protect Kemp. Kemp immediately got in the face of the umpire, and had to be restrained by Shane Victorino, bench coach Trey Hillman, and partially by Mattingly while he argued with the umpire. Kemp also ended up bumping Campos before being taken off the field. Mattingly kept up the fight with the umpires and was ejected himself while apparently arguing about the merits of Kemp getting ejected.

Mattingly’s discussion with a trio of umpires was extremely animated, and he eventually got even more upset and w…

Offense Becomes Punchless Without Kemp

The Dodgers continued a trend Wednesday night, one that has seen their offense decline in June.

Los Angeles scored one run on just three hits against Tommy Milone, and the Athletics’ rookie left-hander pitched a complete game while earning a 4-1 win. The Dodgers have scored just one run on five hits in two games at Oakland.

Since Matt Kemp was placed on the disabled list May 31, the Dodgers have averaged just 3.74 runs per game and have hit .233 as a team, with a .311 slugging percentage and five home runs in 19 games.

The Dodgers have managed to go 10-9 in Kemp’s absence, but they are sorely missing the bat that hit .355 with 12 home runs and a .719 slugging percentage in 36 games. The team has scored two runs or fewer in nine of the 19 games without Kemp.

There is no set timetable for Kemp’s return, as the Dodgers want to make sure the center fielder doesn’t rush back. He was injured May 30, just one day after returning from his first stint on the disabled list this season.

The Dodgers were 9-5 during Kemp’s first DL stay, but their luck without their superstar has appeared to run out.

NOTES, QUOTES
Lilly close to starting a throwing program
–LHP Ted Lilly, on the disabled list with left shoulder inflammation, could begin throwing by the end of the week, manager Don Mattingly said. Lilly hasn’t thrown since May 23, the day he last pitched and five days before was placed on the disabled list.
–RHP Nathan Eovaldi allowed three runs in six innings Wednesday in Oakland, suffering his third loss of the season. Eovaldi has a 2.35 ERA in five starts, but he is 0-3 and the Dodgers have lost all five starts. He is the first Dodgers starter to allow three runs or fewer without a win in his first five starts of a season since Elmer Dessens started the 2005 season with seven such starts in a row.
–CF Matt Kemp, who has missed 33 games through Wednesday in two stints on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain, is expected to return close to the All-Star break. Dodgers trainer Sue Falsone told MLB.com that the club wants Kemp to have a rehab assignment longer than the two games he played with Class AAA Albuquerque prior to his May 29 return. He came back to play just two games with the Dodgers before re-injuring his hamstring.
–OF Tony Gwynn Jr., who hit .304 (17-for-56) in 14 games when thrust into a regular role during CF Matt Kemp’s first stint on the disabled list this season, has hit just .208 (11-for-53) in 17 games since Kemp was placed on the disabled list a second time.
–INFOF Jerry Hairston Jr. had an infield single in the seventh inning Wednesday to snap an 0-for-19 skid. Hairston, who hit .457 (16-for-35) with five extra-base hits in 11 games in May, is hitting .213 (10-for-47) with four extra-base hits in 16 games in June.
BY THE NUMBERS: 5 — Home runs hit by the Dodgers in their last 22 games.
QUOTE TO NOTE: “For the last few days, we’ve kind of scuffled at the plate, but it’s not for a lack of effort.” — C A.J. Ellis, to the Los Angeles Times, on the Dodgers’ lack of offense.

ROSTER REPORT MEDICAL WATCH:
–CF Matt Kemp (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 14. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Albuquerque on May 27, and he was activated May 29. He re-injured the hamstring May 30 and left the game. He went back on the 15-day disabled list May 31, and he is expected to be out until at least late June. He had resumed taking batting practice as of mid-June. He is expected to play more than two minor league rehab games before rejoining the Dodgers.
–LHP Ted Lilly (left shoulder inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 24. An MRI showed no damage, so he won’t need surgery. He might resume throwing during the weekend of June 22-24.
–RHP Blake Hawksworth (arthroscopic right elbow surgeries in January 2012 and February 2012) went on the 60-day disabled list March 27. He played in an intrasquad game at the Dodgers’ Arizona facility on May 24. He is scheduled to pitch in a pair of rehab games June 21 and June 22 with high Class A Rancho Cucamonga.
–RHP Javy Guerra (right knee inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 3. He underwent surgery June 5 and will be out until July.
–INF Justin Sellers (bulging lower back disk) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 23. The problem was causing him numbness in his right leg. He received a second epidural injection in early June.
–2B Mark Ellis (left leg surgery) went on the 15-day disabled list May 19. He had to have a second surgery May 21 to drain his swollen left leg, two days after having an emergency fasciotomy to relieve pressure in the leg. He was hitting off a tee in mid-June and took batting practice June 15, and he has resumed baseball activities. There is no timetable for his return.
–RHP Matt Guerrier (right elbow tendinitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 4. He threw a bullpen session May 16 and then had to rest for three days with elbow soreness. He had more elbow pain May 23, slowing his recovery again. He isn’t expected to return until after the All-Star break.
–RHP Rubby De La Rosa (Tommy John surgery in August 2011) went on the 60-day disabled list March 26.

No Rush to Get Kemp, Lilly Back

The Dodgers have been without a pair of key contributors, CF Matt Kemp and LHP Ted Lilly, for a while, and though both are getting closer to rejoining the team there is still no specific timetable for their respective returns.

Kemp has been on the disabled list since May 31 with a left hamstring strain, the second one he has suffered this season. He will accompany the Dodgers to Oakland on their road trip this week but no date has been set for his return. Kemp was originally estimated to miss four weeks.

“If you start putting a timetable on it, these guys are goal-oriented. It’s almost like it pushes the guy to do something before his body is ready to do it,” said manager Don Mattingly. “I think it’s better not to put those artificial deadlines on these guys. Let’s find out when they’re healthy and ready to go, and let’s go.”

Lilly has been on the disabled list since May 24 with left shoulder inflammation. He still hasn’t thrown since going on the disabled list but has reported slight improvement in his shoulder in recent days. However, the Dodgers will be cautious with Lilly.

“We don’t have a timetable. It’s been one of those things in the past, when he’s had this kind of thing going on he came back too early,” said Mattingly. “They want him to be pain-free before he starts throwing again, and he’s not there yet.”

Once he starts throwing again, Lilly will need to build his arm strength back up and pitch in minor league rehab games before he is ready to rejoin the Dodgers, meaning he is likely at least a month away.

With Kemp and Lilly, the Dodgers don’t know exactly when they will return. But one thing is certain: they won’t be rushed back.

NOTES, QUOTES
Hawksworth to start rehab assignment
–RHP Blake Hawksworth is scheduled to pitch in a pair of minor league rehab games June 21 and 22 with high-A Rancho Cucamonga. Hawksworth has been rehabbing at the Dodgers’ facility at Camelback Ranch in Arizona and has yet to pitch this season.
–LHP Chris Capuano struck out a season-high 12 batters in eight innings Sunday against the White Sox. Capuano had a 5.87 ERA in his three previous June starts but said he made a mechanical adjustment to get his delivery on the right track.
“I had a lot of trouble putting the ball where I want,” Capuano said. “But my last couple bullpens, then today, felt much better with the location of my pitches.”
–SS Dee Gordon delivered an RBI single in the 10th inning Sunday for his second walk-off hit of the season. Since returning to the leadoff spot on June 3, Gordon is hitting .276 with a .354 on-base percentage and 10 runs scored in 14 games.
–IFOF Elian Herrera had three hits on Sunday against the White Sox, tying a career high. Herrera hit .353 (6-for-17) for the week, with three doubles and five walks in six games.
–OF Tony Gwynn hit a triple in the 10th inning and scored the winning run against the White Sox on Sunday. The triple ended an 0-for-16 slump for Gwynn that featured eight strikeouts.
–Manager Don Mattingly was ejected in the sixth inning by third base umpire Jerry Meals for arguing a run that was taken off the board for the Dodgers. Meals called C Matt Treanor out on appeal for running home too soon on a sacrifice fly. It was the fourth ejection of the season for Mattingly, who has been ejected on both Father’s Day and Mother’s Day this season. “If you’re not 100 percent sure, I don’t know how you can overturn the run,” Mattingly said.
BY THE NUMBERS: 6 — number of regular-season series the Dodgers played against the White Sox in interleague play before getting their first series win, taking two of three from Chicago at Dodger Stadium over the weekend.
QUOTE TO NOTE: “If you’re not 100 percent sure, I don’t know how you can overturn the run.” — manager Don Mattingly, on third base umpire Jerry Meals calling Matt Treanor out on appeal for leaving third base too early on a sacrifice fly, negating a run for the Dodgers.
