A.J. Ellis’ Wife Gave Birth to Their Child in Front Seat of Car

A.J. Ellis’ story may top all the crazy childbirth stories you have heard. The Dodgers catcher says his wife, Cindy, gave birth to their third child in the front seat of their car as they were rushing to the hospital. Ellis told the story to Molly McKnight, who wrote about it for ESPN The Magazine. Audrey Elizabeth Ellis was born on October 12, around 8:00 a.m. She came about two weeks early, and several hours early by Ellis’ count. Cindy Ellis woke up her husband, who has caught for the Dodgers the past five seasons, around 7:00 a.m. to tell him her water broke. A.J. figured he had some time to get ready before they left to the hospital, and that the 30-mile drive to the hospital where Cindy’s doctor was located would be no problem. He was wrong. Cindy began her contractions while they were in the car, and, according to what Ellis told Knight, began screaming that they wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time. “And I’m thinking, this is 2012, not the ‘Oregon Trail.’ Of course we’re gonn

Woman in Hat Butchers ‘God Bless America’

San Francisco is known for a lot of crazy things.  Banning Happy Meals, trying to limit the sale of goldfish but still allowing Brian Wilson to roam free seem to be the norm.  So having a woman wearing a giant hat with a model of the city on it sing “God Bless America” at Game 6 of the NLCS seemed fitting for the free-spirited fans. That was until an visibly embarrassed Misa Malone, from the San Francisco musical revue, the “Beach Blanket Babylon.” flubbed her way through the words of the song in front of the Candlestick Park crowd. It takes a lot of guts to get out in front of 60,000 fans on a nationally-televised game but, come on, next time don’t forget the words.Performers from the campy Beach Blanket Babylon — the longest running musical revue in theater history — routinely perform at Giants games so it was no surprise to see the singer in her outrageous attire. We’ve all heard of people wearing a city on their sleeve, but wearing it on your head is tough — especially wh

Injuries to Beltre, Hamilton Aren’t Serious

ARLINGTON, Texas The Texas Rangers got some good news on the injury front one night after seeing three players leave the game in a 5-2 victory over Cleveland.

An MRI on the left shoulder of Adrian Beltre revealed no structural damage but slight inflammation. He is not in the starting lineup Thursday and is listed as day-to-day.

Josh Hamilton, who left the game with a sore left knee, got an injection in the knee after Wednesday’s game. He is not in the starting lineup Thursday either but is expected to play Friday when the Rangers open a series against Seattle.

Third baseman Mike Olt, who replaced Beltre before getting hurt himself, has plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He is seeing a specialist but is expected to miss at least 10 to 14 days.

Alvarez Ends Drought, Blue Jays Beat Mariners 7-2

With his idol watching from the visitors’ dugout, Henderson Alvarez ended a long wait between wins on Sunday.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his third home run in three games, Alvarez won for the first time since August and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Mariners 7-2.

Alvarez (1-2) allowed one run and six hits in six-plus innings to win for the second time in 15 major league starts. The right-hander, whose only other victory came at Baltimore last Aug. 31, walked a career-high three and struck out one.

Jeff Mathis added a two-run homer as Toronto broke open a close game with a five-run eighth inning.

”(Alvarez) did well,” Mathis said. ”He threw his sinker and kept it down in the zone. He got a lot of early outs and ground ball outs. That was the key to his success today.”

Chone Figgins and Miguel Olivo hit solo homers for the Mariners, who lost their second straight.

”We had some good hacks at him but he started changing speeds, started taking something off his fastball,” Figgins said. ”I think he saw that we were seeing his pitches and started taking a lot off his fastball.”

Alvarez was born in the same Venezuelan city as Mariners ace Felix Hernandez and has acknowledged modeling his game on the Seattle righty, a two-time All Star and the 2010 AL Cy Young winner.

Opposing batters are noticing the similarities, too.

”Everything he does, Felix does,” Mariners catcher Olivo said of Alvarez. ”That’s good when you follow a big superstar like that. One day he’s going to be the same thing.”

The Mariners jumped in front early when Figgins drilled Alvarez’s sixth pitch of the game over the wall in right, his second leadoff shot this season.

Seattle left-hander Jason Vargas (3-2) held Toronto hitless until Eric Thames’ two-out double in the fourth, an otherwise routine fly ball that dropped in front of Figgins in left.

”I broke back,” Figgins said. ”I felt bad that (Vargas) was going so good and had a no-hitter going for me to break back. (Thames) took a big swing, he was up in the count. I didn’t know he hit it off the end of the bat.”

The hit moved Encarnacion, who had walked, up to third base, but Vargas escaped when Figgins caught Lawrie’s fly ball for the third out.

The Blue Jays broke through against Vargas in the fifth. Rasmus led off with a single, advanced to second on a grounder and scored on a two-out base hit to right by Kelly Johnson.

Alvarez was replaced by Evan Crawford after Munenori Kawasaki’s leadoff single in the seventh. Figgins sacrificed Kawasaki to second but Crawford got Dustin Ackley and Ichiro Suzuki to ground out.

Encarnacion had a solo homer in Toronto’s 9-5 defeat Friday and hit his fourth career grand slam in Saturday’s 7-0 win. He went deep again in the finale, lacing a tiebreaking drive to left in the sixth off Vargas. Encarnacion’s homer was his team-leading seventh.

Encarnacion, who walked in his first two plate appearances Sunday, was hit on the left arm by Steve Delabar in the eighth, responding with a long stare at the mound.

”I can’t say whether that pitch got away from them intentionally or what,” Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. ”But we answered the right way.”

Charlie Furbush replaced Delabar before Jose Bautista, who had led off with a single, and Encarnacion pulled off a double steal. Pinch hitter Rajai Davis was intentionally walked before Brett Lawrie hit a two-run double. One batter later, Davis scored on an errant pickoff throw by Olivo. Colby Rasmus struck out before Mathis homered into the second deck in left, his second.

Davis injured his right wrist diving back to third on Olivo’s throw and left the game. He was replaced by Ben Francisco in the ninth.

Casey Janssen worked the eighth and Francisco Cordero gave up Olivo’s second homer of the season in the ninth.

NOTES: Figgins also hit a leadoff homer in Seattle’s 4-1 win at Cleveland on April 18. … Seattle announced that LH George Sherrill will undergo season-ending elbow surgery on May 4. Sherrill appeared in two games this year. … Mariners SS Brendan Ryan, who is stuck in an 0 for 18 slump, was held out of the starting lineup and replaced by Munenori Kawasaki. 1B Justin Smoak, mired in a 2 for 27 slide, also got the day off. Smoak and Ryan are both expected to start Monday at Tampa Bay.

Cards’ Rings Feature the Rally Squirrel

The “Rally Squirrel” is featured on the Cardinals World Series Championship rings. – Photo courtesy of St. Louis Cardinals The St. Louis Cardinals kicked off their first home stand of the season with a deflating 9-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday afternoon in front of a packed house at Busch Stadium. Unfortunately, the home opener was a big disappointment. Luckily for the Cardinals, their spirits should quickly be lifted on Saturday as they receive their 2011 World Series Championship rings before they square off against the Cubs again on Saturday. The rings will be presented to the Cardinals before Saturday’s game and the look of the rings is much of what you would expect for World Champions. There is the tradition of the Cardinals eleven World Series Championships remembered with each season tattooed around the band. There is the familiar bird on the bat on the front of the ring, made of rubies. There are the pillars of Busch Stadium on one side. And of co…

Bill Murray Runs Bases, Then Throws First Pitch

Actor Bill Murray, a longtime fan of the Chicago Cubs, was invited to throw the honorary first pitch before Thursday’s Opening Day game at Wrigley Field. Murray was introduced to the crowd before the game and to get himself into the spirit, he ran around the bases and slid into home plate. Murray’s first pitch bounced in front of home plate, but then again, he had just ran around the bases and provided some quality laughs for the home crowd, so he gets a pass on this one. Olney: Yanks Want Jones for Burnett

More news on the A.J. Burnett front.
Apparently there are some legs to this story and the speculation that the Yankees want Garrett Jones appears to be true.
My feelings on a Jones for Burnett and cash trade are very mixed. With as mediocre as Jones is, the deal, in theory makes sense. However, outside of Jones, the Pirates outlook at first base looks quite bad. Burnett would help shore up the rotation, but losing Jones would create a pretty big hole.
The Yankees really seem like they want to move Burnett, so hopefully talks will go on.
