Jason Kipnis Burned a Hole in His Pants (Video)

Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis burned a hole in his pants when he stood too close to the clubhouse heater during Sunday’s game at Comerica Park against the Detroit Tigers.

Kipnis had a hole in his pants that was at least a couple of inches in diameter, and said he didn’t feel any burning when it happened because he had additional layers underneath. With a hole that big, Kipnis was fortunate that he had those extra layers on and avoided serious injury.

Kipnis played with the hole in his pants for the rest of the game during the 4-3 Indians victory.

Detroit Tigers: The Week That Was

As the last week of April came to an end for the Detroit Tigers with a national showcase sweep of the Atlanta Braves on ESPN’s Sunday night baseball, fans can once again rest easy. But isn’t that always the case after a home stand? The Tigers are now a sultry 8-3 at home but just 5-7 away from Comerica Park. Add it all up and you have a solid 13-10 team that is just a half game back of division leading Kansas City.
With a full slate of games this week against the Twins at home and a 4-game road set v. the Astros, the Tigers could get even healthier in the win-loss column.

Sweeping the Braves. Yes, the Braves were on the tail end of a long road swing. Yes, the Braves strike out like nobody’s business. And yes, the Braves are a really good National League team. When the Braves landed in Detroit they were sporting a robust 15-7 record. Not anymore. Tigers pitching struck out Atlanta hitters 39 times during the 3-games stretch and Detroi…

Mariners Catcher Kelly Shoppach Makes Laughable Throw to Second Base (GIF)

Seattle Mariners catcher Kelly Shoppach made what may be one of the worst throws ever by a major league catcher during Tuesday night’s game at Safeco Field against the Detroit Tigers.

It happened in the ninth inning as Tigers pinch runner Andy Dirks was stealing second base. Dirks made it easily as Shoppach somehow threw the ball straight down into the ground less than five feet from home plate.

The throw by Shoppach didn’t lead to any Tiger runs, but certainly led to some laughs, and a memorable GIF, for baseball fans everywhere.

Fan Nearly Starts Brawl with Peanuts?

Brandon Inge spent 11-plus seasons as a utility infielder for the Detroit Tigers before being traded to the Oakland A’s last season. He played in 74 games for the A’s last year and struggled at the plate with a .226 average, and as a result Inge has begun the 2013 season in Triple-A with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. As someone who spent a large portion of his career in Detroit, Inge is likely no stranger to unruly fans. On Tuesday, he learned that minor league fans can be just as ruthless when a brawl nearly broke out after a Toledo Mud Hens fan was chucking peanuts at him. The Toledo Blade described the incident: According to eyewitness reports, in the early innings of the contest the unidentified fan was throwing peanuts at the (Indianapolis) Indians’ Brandon Inge, who spent significant time with both the Detroit Tigers and Hens. Before the fifth inning began, the fan came to railing on the far side of the Indianapolis dugout and exchanged words with Inge. A number of Inge’s teammates came t

Detroit Tigers: Austin Jackson’s Star Rises

With Detroit Tigers centerfielder Austin Jackson, it’s all becoming quite clear now just who he is. Sometimes you watch a young player develop and you can’t make heads or tails of what to expect from one year to the next. Jackson was initially such a case.
As a rookie he smoked line drives all over the field on his way to a .293 average. He did this even though he struck out 170 times. His strong offensive season was fueled by a .396 batting average on balls in play (BABIP).
Austin Jackson
In his 2nd season Jackson toiled most of the year as his strikeout rate increased to 27.1% of his at-bats and he was a little less lucky in the BABIP department (although still above league average) with a .340 mark. Jackson K’d 181 times in 2011 at the top of the Tigers’ lineup and caused unrest among fans and concern on the part of management.
Changes were imminent with Jackson’s approach but the results are never a given in his line of work. He busted his tail during the 2011-12 offseason with …

Detroit Tigers: The Week That Was

As week 2 of the season came to an end for the Detroit Tigers with a rousing 10-1 win over the A’s, all seems right with the world. At 7-5, the Tigers are tied with the Royals for 1st place in the AL Central after taking 2 of 3 from both the Blue Jays and A’s. The bats are bashing, the starting pitching has been outstanding, the defense has been nearly flawless, and the bullpen….well, that’s another matter.
Below I will categorize a variety of things while giving my opinion as to what’s what 12 games into the 2013 season.
Most Important Outcome of the Week
Prince Fielder
Beating Oakland 2 out of 3 on the road. The Tigers need to play well on the road this season and to go into Oakland, a place where they have struggled at times, and completely wipe out two outstanding pitchers on Saturday and Sunday for the series win was very impressive. The A’s were 8-2 and riding high before the Tigers came to town and knocked them back down to size.

Martinez Suffers Odd Baseball Injury

The Detroit Tigers were anxious to get Victor Martinez back into their lineup this season after the slugger missed all of 2012 with a torn ACL. Martinez has played in six games for the Tigers this season, but he may already need to miss some game action. This time, Martinez’s injury has nothing to do with his knee. Instead, he has been listed as day-to-day after cutting his finger on a bat rack. According to MLive.com’s James Schmehl, Martinez caught his thumb on a metal bolt on the team’s bat rack and suffered a cut that required eight stitches. Accidents happen. Hopefully Martinez won’t have to miss much time, as it’s been a frustrating past year for him with injuries. Hey, at least the 34-year-old didn’t hurt himself in a fit of rage. We saw players miss time last year because they punched stuff not once, not twice, but three times. That’s the type of stuff that can be avoided. From the sound of it, Martinez just needs to be more careful around jagged stuff.
