When Jose Reyes makes his debut with the Toronto Blue Jays this season, he will be playing for his third team in as many years. Bouncing around from team-to-team can be challenging, but such is the life of a professional athlete. However, Reyes insists Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria tried to make life more difficult for him than it had to be.
In addition to assuring Reyes that the Marlins would never trade him, the shortstop says Loria was telling him to buy himself a nice house in Miami right up until two days before he was traded to Toronto.
“He always told me to get a nice house in Miami,” Reyes said, via Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com. “I was at a dinner with him in New York, and he was still talking about the house.
“Two days later, I got traded.”
Reyes said he was so stunned by the news that he had been traded after the discussion he and Loria had at dinner that he thought someone was playing a prank on him. He quickly realized it was the real deal, and he said he has not spoken to Loria or any o

St. Louis Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. and general manager John Mozeliak head up a committee that is looking to have Tony La Russa’s replacement on board in the next 10 days, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The team will interview fewer than 10 candidates for the open managerial position, the paper reports. That list includes Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo and former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona, the paper notes. The Philadelphia Phillies have also given permission to the team to speak to minor-league manager Ryne Sandberg, who was told Wednesday by Chicago Cubs president of baseball of operations Theo Epstein that he isn’t in the running for the managerial job there.
Others that will get interviews by Mozeliak, according to the Post-Dispatch will be the manager of the Cardinals’ Triple-A team, the Memphis Redbirds, Chris Maloney; minor-league instructor Mike Matheny; and Chicago White Sox coach Joe McEwing.
Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon is not on the list, sources tell the paper. He has another year on his contract and “is expected to sign an extension prior to spring training,” the paper reports.

The Astros give Roy Oswalt a not so friendly welcome to his old home, as the Phils lose, 5-1.
The Phils took the lead in the second as, with a man on second, and with one man out, Pete Orr hits an RBI single, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Astros tied up the ballgame at one-all in the fourth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Jimmy Paredes hits an RBI infield single, as second baseman Orr and shortstop Jimmy Rollins collided behind second base, trying to field his potential doubleplay ball, as J.D. Martinez, who had earlier doubled, then went to third on Brian Bogusevic’s single, on a fly ball that Ibanez did not catch as he broke in too late, while Bogusevic, who had earlier singled, would stop at second base. The Astros then took the lead as, once again with runners on the corners, after Jose Altuve was safe at first on a force out, 3-6, beating the throw back to first base, while Paredes is wiped out at sec…

The Los Angeles Angels are planning to use ace righthander Jered Weaver on three days rest Sunday to get him an potentially pivotal extra start at the end of the season.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the Angels will start Weaver against Baltimore on Sunday. He also is scheduled to start Wednesday vs. Oakland.
By starting Weaver on short rest Sunday, the Angels would be setting up their rotation to also have him pitch Sept. 28 vs. Texas, the final day of the regular season. Los Angeles trails first-place Texas by three games in the American League West.
Weaver is 16-7 with a 2.44 ERA in 30 starts this season. He has pitched just once on less than four days rest and did not fare well.
On Aug. 28 at Texas, Weaver pitched on three days rest and allowed seven runs, eight hits and four walks in six innings of a 9-5 loss.

Florida Marlins center fielder Mike Cameron hasn’t had hamstring issues since 2007, but now tightness in his right one will keep him from playing for a few days, according to MLB.com.
“Cameron experienced tightness in his hamstring while making a catch in the 11th inning on Tuesday” and was then replaced with a pinch runner in the bottom half of that inning after getting a walk, the site reports.
“I’m going to give him a breather,” said Manager Jack McKeon, MLB.com reports. “Not that he couldn’t play. We’re going to look at these [young guys] anyway.”
After all, the Marlins have a very firm grip on last place in the National League East so it doesn’t seem worth risking further injury to the 38-year-old Cameron.

The New York Mets have lost five straight and are now only a half game ahead of the fourth-place Washington Nationals in the National League East. As much as the Mets could use an offensive boost right now, the team won’t be getting the help of its four-time All-Star shortstop, Jose Reyes, anytime soon.
Reyes went on the disabled list on Aug. 8 with a strained left hamstring and won’t be returning when his 15 days are up, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. In fact, before Sunday’s 5-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, Manager Terry Collins said Reyes hasn’t even resumed any activity, the paper reports.
Reyes, of course, was having a fantastic season, hitting .336 with 144 hits, 80 runs scored, 34 stolen bases, and 16 triples. He’ll be a free agent at season’s end.

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips was hit on the left elbow by a pitch Tuesday night and is now saying that he’ll be out for five games as a result, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
“X-rays were negative,” Reds Manager Dusty Baker said, according to the paper. “It was right on the tip of the elbow. It might be a couple of days.”
Now the Reds will be without their starting second baseman as well as disabled-list residents third baseman Scott Rolen and shortstop Zack Cozart all at once.
The Reds are currently 10 games back in the National League Central and 12 back in the National League wild-card race.
