Jeremy Affeldt Returned $500,000 to Giants After Noticing Contract Error

Are you as honest as Jeremy Affeldt?
In his new book, the San Francisco Giants relief pitcher says he returned $ 500,000 to the team after noticing a clerical error in his contract.
The San Francisco Chronicle’s Henry Schulman shares what happened.
According to Schulman, Affeldt writes that he was set to earn $ 4 million in 2010 from the team. They negotiated a two-year contract extension for 2011 and 2012, and the language was mistakenly changed to say he was going to earn $ 4.5 million in 2010. Both sides signed the contract without noticing the error.
After Affeldt realized the error, he spoke with a few people who said he was legally entitled to the money. However, Affeldt didn’t feel right accepting the money, so he notified the team and they signed a new deal that included the correct amount.
Affeldt thinks his honesty helped make negotiations smoother last winter when he and the team agreed to a 3-year, $ 18 million contract. I’m guessing his consecutive strong seasons in 2011…

Albert Pujols Says He May Not Honor Entire Contract with Angels if His Play Deterioates

When Albert Pujols left the St. Louis Cardinals in favor of the 10-year, $ 254 million contract he received from owner Arte Moreno of the Los Angeles Angels, most in St. Louis felt that Pujols left the Cardinals because he felt the Cardinals were not showing him enough respect by not offering a similar 10-year deal.

As it turns out, according to a report by Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, Pujols might not even honor and fulfill the entire 10-year contract he received from the Angels.

Pujols told DiGiovanna that he would walk away from the game once he felt that he could not compete at a high level any longer.

“God has given me ability and talent, but the day I feel like I can’t compete any more on this level, I’m not going to embarrass myself. I’m going to walk off. Whether that’s next year, two years from now, only God knows.”

At this point, Cardinals’ fans really are not too angry with Pujols any longer. The organization has locked up Y…

Posey’s Contract Gives New Meaning to the Term “Ignorance”

Buster Posey will be counted on to lead the Giants for the next several years.
Tools of ignorance indeed.

Try telling that to Giants catcher Buster Posey. He just signed a nine-year, $ 167 million contract extension. It’s the largest guaranteed contract in history for a player with three or fewer years of major league experience.

Posey rebounded from an horrific injury in 2011 to lead the National League in batting in 2012 with a .336 average, becoming only the third catcher in major league history to win a batting title.  Bubbles Hargrave hit .353 for the 1926 Reds, while Twins catcher Joe Mauer has won three batting crowns (2006, 2008 & 2009).

Posey entered the big leagues for good in 2010 as one of the most highly-touted prospects of the last decade. He was the fifth overall pick of the 2008 draft, and hasn’t disappointed.  He was named the NL Rookie of the Year in 2010, hitting .305 with 18 home runs 67 RBI and an OPS of .862.

On May 25, 2011 Posey was involved in a v…

Justin Verlander Lands Giant Contract, but Is He Overpaid?

The Tigers’ made Justin Verlander one of the richest athletes in sports.  His contract of 180 million guaranteed highlights the difference between guaranteed contracts in MLB and the NFL contracts.

Tony Romo received a contract worth 108 million.  The main issue is that baseball contracts are guaranteed and football contracts are only partially guaranteed.  Romo is only guaranteed 55 million from that deal.
Pitchers take the mound every 5th day and influence maybe 40 games of a 164 game season.  That’s around 25% of a teams games.  Most of the time the pitcher is only in for around 6 innings a game.  So Verlander is throwing somewhere around 240 of a teams 1500 innings, or 16% of a teams innings in a season.
The bottom line here is that Verlander is getting paid an unbelievable contract for a player that isn’t on the field every game and when he is, he doesn’t even hit.
In contrast, Tony Romo touches the ball on every offensive play for the Cowboys.  …

Contract Notes: Karstens, J. Sanchez, G. Sanchez, Hawpe, Inge

Jeff Karstens can make an additional $ 1 M in performance bonuses. – Image Credit: Pittsburgh Pirates
Tom Singer has a few contract details and incentives for some of the players in major league camp. The details can be read here. My thoughts on each player below.
**Jeff Karstens has $ 1 M in potential performance bonuses. He’d get a bonus of $ 100,000 each for 150 and 160 innings pitched. He’d get $ 175,000 each for 170 and 180 innings, then $ 225,000 each for 190 and 200 innings. If Karstens somehow reached 200 innings, he’d be a massive value at $ 3.5 M total. Even if he only gets to his career high of 162.1 innings, he’d still be a huge value at $ 2.7 M, assuming he pitches like he has the last two seasons.
**Gaby Sanchez could receive $ 25,000 each for 425, 475, and 525 plate appearances. I don’t see any of these happening. Sanchez has reached those totals in the past as a full-time starter. He’ll be platooning with Garrett Jones, and taking the smaller part of the platoon. The only way he’d get

Yankees Want to Void a-Rod’s Contract – Yeah, Good Luck with That

While the New York Yankees and their attorneys feverishly search for an out in Alex Rodriguez’s contract, the rest of the baseball world points their fingers and laugh. Why? Because there isn’t a chance in hell that the Yankees get out from under this deal, short of A-Rod physically assaulting Hal and Hank Steinbrenner and being thrown in jail. And even then, it is unlikely that the deal gets voided. You are probably well aware by now that Alex Rodriguez is linked to, along with several other Major League Baseball players, to a Miami-based “chemist” who supplied performance-enhancing drugs. It is being reported by Miami New Times that A-Rod was receiving PEDs from Anthony Bosch, including Human Growth Hormone and synthetic testosterone. According to the records obtained, Rodriguez was paid through April 30, 2012. He is referred to in the records of Bosch as ‘Alex Rod.’ Other players involved are Gio Gonzalez, Nelson Cruz, Melky Cabrera, Bartolo Colon and Yasmani Granda. The latter t…

Yanks Trying to Void a-Rod’s Contract?

You want a can of worms to be opened? Well, the Yankees are trying to do just that with their attempt to void the remaining five years and $ 114 million on Alex Rodriguez’s contract in the wake of this morning’s Biogenesis scandal. The Yankees are looking at numerous issues to see whether or not they’ll be able to void the deal, including him breaking the law by purchasing PEDs from Anthony Bosch and his clinic and him receving medical treatment from an outside doctor without the approval of the team. The near-unanimous conclusion is that the Yankees won’t be able to void the deal, and even if they could, they wouldn’t be able to until after MLB concluded its investigation into Biogenesis. Even if Rodriguez were proven to have bought PEDs or other substances from Bosch and Biogenesis, there is a clause in MLB’s drug testing policy that prevents teams from imposing any discipline onto a player (which would include a voided contract) past the discipline tha…
