Despite Struggles Cubs Will Keep Darwin Barney at Major League Level

The Chicago Cubs have no plans to send struggling second basemen Darwin Barney to Triple-A. Barney is hitting a disappointing .153/.274/.264 on the season.
Chicago did not expect Barney, a career .257 hitter, to be a large portion of their offense this season but his current problems at the plate can not be over looked even with gold glove caliber defense.
According to Gordon Wittenmyer Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said prior to Saturday’s game against Washington that the Cubs would keep Barney with the big league club. Hoyer went on to say that Barney had “earned a lot of playing time.”

Stanton’s Home Run Clears Scoreboard

Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hit his first home run of the year on Saturday night in his 18th game. Stanton got his money’s worth with the moonshot, as his first inning homer off of Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood traveled an estimated 440 feet and went over the scoreboard in left field at Marlins Park. Last May, Stanton hit a similar blast that broke the same scoreboard he cleared against the Cubs. Unfortunately for Stanton and the Marlins, his first homer of the year wasn’t enough and Miami fell 3-2. Their record now sits at 5-19, 10.5 games behind the first place Braves in the NL East.  [follow]

Should the Chicago Cubs Spend More?

The Chicago Cubs are spending less money and winning fewer games, but it could be a good thing.

Between 2008-2011, the Cubs spent no less than $ 120m on payroll, excluding special bonuses and players that were called up or acquired mid-season. In the same time period, Cubs losses increased every year (64, 78, 87, and 91, respectively). After ballooning in 2010, the Cubs payroll has since shrunk from $ 146m to $ 80m, due in large part to dwindling success.

Bite-sized payrolls don’t keep a team from winning games. The Tampa Bay Rays spent $ 41m in 2011 and made it to the NLDS. The 2010 Rangers spent $ 56m and reached the World Series. The 2012 Athletics spent $ 61m and were very, very good.

The Cubs spent $ 80m in 2012 and lost 101 games.

To reverse the process in 2013, however, Chicago needs to find out whom to pay to win games. Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo are the only hitters on the roster that hit over .280 last season, and Matt Garza is the only pit…

Carlos Marmol Loses Job As Cubs Closer

Chicago Cubs closer Carlos Marmol has been pulled from his ninth inning role after his first blown save of the year last night in Atlanta. Kyuji Fujikawa will replace Marmol as the Cubs’ fireman, according to reports.

Marmol is actually reportedly taking the demotion well, stating “You can’t complain about it. They say it’s better for me and for the team. I’ll take it. I agree.”

Saying that this season has been a mess for Marmol might be an understatement. In three games this year, Marmol has closed out just one of them and completed 1 2/3 innings. He’s allowed five runs on six hits, along with two homers to go along with two walks and two strikeouts. He was pulled from the Cubs 3-1 Opening Day win against Pittsburgh in the ninth after hitting a batter, allowing a single, and walking a batter while getting just one out.

Fujikawa’s brief major league tenure was going fine until Saturday against Atlanta, when he allowed three runs on four…

Fan Walks Away with Kelly Shoppach’s Bat (Video)

Seattle Mariners catcher Kelly Shoppach lost his bat during a swing and a miss in Friday’s spring training game against the Chicago Cubs, sending his bat flying into the crowd where a fan picked up the bat in the aisle…and walked away with it.

The Mariners probably would have tried to make an effort to get Shoppach’s bat back, but the fan never stopped walking, so they never had the chance.
