Shane Victorino Crashed Hard into the Wall on a Home Run (GIF)

Shane Victorino went to the hospital on Sunday to have his ribs and back examined after he crashed into the right field wall at Fenway Park trying to catch a home run ball.
Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Emilio Bonifacio hit a bomb to right field with a man on in the top of the fourth inning against the Boston Red Sox. Victorino, who was playing right, raced back to try making the catch. Victorino clearly did not know where he was, because he slammed into the wall at nearly full speed.
The impact of the collision caused him to lose his glove over the wall and collapse to the ground.
Victorino stayed in the game for a few more innings, but he was replaced after the sixth. Jason Mastrodonado says Victorino left the game because he felt stiff.
The ugly irony is that Providence Journal beat writer Tim Britton says Victorino was saying the other day that he didn’t like the short wall in right and that he “was afraid he’d end up in the bullpen trying to make a catch.”
Victorino didn’t…

Red Sox Reliever Joe Hanrahan to Undergo Surgery

Boston Red Sox reliever Joel Hanrahan confirmed on Saturday morning that he would undergo season-ending surgery.
Hanrahan’s flexor tendon is torn off the bone and he will meet with Dr. James Andrews next week for surgery. The surgery will keep Hanrahan out of action for six months and there is no guarantee that the right hander will not require Tommy John surgery.
The Red Sox acquired Hanrahan from the Pirates in December. He will become a free agent at the end of the season. In nine games this season Hanrahan notched 4 saves but had a 9.82 ERA and a 2.18 WHIP.
Andrew Bailey, who Boston had hoped will fill in as the teams closer, is unlikely to return from the disabled list on Tuesday. Bailey may end up needing a rehab assignment for his forearm injury. Junichi Tazawa will fill in at closer in his absence.

Joel Hanrahan’s Wild Pitch Rips Sign Behind Backstop (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes.

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Joel Hanrahan threw a wild pitch that ripped the “Ace Ticket” advertising sign behind home plate at Fenway Park during the top of the ninth in Monday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins.

Hanrahan’s pitch to Minnesota Twins batter Bryan Dozier was a bit high and got past Red Sox pitcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia
and through to the backstop, where it landed in the middle of the sign and ripped it.

The wild pitch served as an omen, as Dozier hit a home run to tie the game. However, the Red Sox were able to overcome and win the game in extra innings.

Red Sox 1B Napoli Has Good Memories in Texas

Mike Napoli has a lot of great memories of his two seasons with the Texas Rangers, including his first World Series.

Now he’s back, playing first base for the Boston Red Sox at Rangers Ballpark.

Napoli says it’s not ”too weird” to be back in Texas and that he looks to competing against his good friends.

After 54 homers the last two seasons for Texas, Napoli went into Friday night’s series opener with a majors-leading 22 extra-base hits, including six homers.

Napoli says the chance to play first base every day, rather than also catching, was the best fit for his career and health. He initially agreed to a three-year deal with Boston before a hip condition was detected during a physical, and is playing on a one-year deal.

Yanks to Pay Tribute to Boston

The New York Yankees, the hated rival of the Boston Red Sox, who have a seventh-inning tradition tradition of playing ‘God Bless America,’ something the team has done ever since the events of 9/11, will play Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ at then end of the third inning of Tuesday night’s game, according to report from ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand. The song is seventh-inning tradition of the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The Yanks plan to do this as show of support to those affected by Monday’s tragedy at the Boston Marathon, where two bombs exploded at near the finish line of the annual Patriot’s Day event. There was another explosion at the nearby JFK library. We tip our hat to the Steinbrenner family and the Yankee organization for the great honor.

Francona Got Lost on Way to Ballpark

I really don’t know what to make of Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona. On one hand he’s shown that he’s a pretty good manager after winning two World Series while in charge of the Boston Red Sox, and on the other hand, he gets busted for sexting a woman almost half his age last year. Now, according to ESPN, Francona somehow, got lost on his way to the ballpark on Monday, although, he only lives two blocks away. “I got lost three times,” he said. “Even when I got to the garage two people who work here said, `Hey, do you know where you’re going?’ I was like, `Nope.” Luckily for the former Boston Red Sox manager, an employee for the Indians picked him up in a golf cart and got him to the park. Francona also said that the people he ran into during his commute were really kind to him and that he prefers to stay as close as possible to his workplace. “Cleveland is officially the nicest people I’ve ever met,” he said. “Everybody I did walk by said, `Hello.’ That’s a little differ

John Lackey Suffers Biceps Injury

If the initial diagnosis of John Lackey’s arm injury is any indication, he and the Boston Red Sox should consider themselves lucky. After throwing a pitch to Jose Reyes in the 5th inning, Lackey left the game with his right arm hanging there, eerily reminiscent of when a pitcher tears the UCL or does something to their shoulder. Your browser does not support iframes. Fortunately for the Red Sox and Lackey, the tests after the game showed his surgically repaired elbow was strong and that he suffered a biceps strain. He’ll return to Boston for further testing. With Franklin Morales still out for the Red Sox and if Lackey is expected to miss a start, we can expect Alfredo Aceves to step in for him until he returns unless the injury is serious. But we’ll wait for that. As much as we all hate Lackey, it was awful to see him hurt like that. Hopefully things turn out okay for him. Follow Ian on Twitter @soxanddawgs.
