They say you judge your baseball teams after 40 games of the regular season. The Cleveland Indians have played 41 games and they have played most of them very well. The team is in first place in the A.L. Central and even the starting pitchers have done better than expected. The Indians won another one run game over the Seattle Mariners yesterday. That makes 2 games they won in the late innings and 2 games they were able to pull off to take over first place in the A.L. Central. The Indians started Zach McAllister, he continues to throw well and he pitched for 7-1/3 innings giving up only 2 earned runs on 6 hits. Chris Perez came in to close it down in the 9th but wasn’t able to hold the Mariners. He gave up 2 home runs and the Tribe had to pull out some more of their late inning magic to pull out their 24th win. Mark Reynolds was able to pull out an infield hit that knocked the Mariners short stop on his butt trying to filed the ball. His throw was bad coming to the plate and Jason K…

Roy Halladay’s return to the Philadelphia Phillies is uncertain after undergoing surgery. The Phillies right hander had a 8.65 ERA on the season prior to the surgery.
Halladay had a bone spur in his shoulder removed and his torn rotator cuff repaired on Wednesday. Halladay will rest for the next six to eight weeks before resuming a throwing program according to Mike Axisa of CBS Sports.
At the end of the season Halladay will become a free agent.
The Phillies are also without pitcher John Lannan who will also miss six to eight weeks with a quad strain near his knee. On Wednesday the team signed veteran pitcher Carlos Zambrano to a minor league deal.
At 19-22 and only 3.5 games back, the Phillies are well without striking distance of the cooling Atlanta Braves.

Are you as honest as Jeremy Affeldt?
In his new book, the San Francisco Giants relief pitcher says he returned $ 500,000 to the team after noticing a clerical error in his contract.
The San Francisco Chronicle’s Henry Schulman shares what happened.
According to Schulman, Affeldt writes that he was set to earn $ 4 million in 2010 from the team. They negotiated a two-year contract extension for 2011 and 2012, and the language was mistakenly changed to say he was going to earn $ 4.5 million in 2010. Both sides signed the contract without noticing the error.
After Affeldt realized the error, he spoke with a few people who said he was legally entitled to the money. However, Affeldt didn’t feel right accepting the money, so he notified the team and they signed a new deal that included the correct amount.
Affeldt thinks his honesty helped make negotiations smoother last winter when he and the team agreed to a 3-year, $ 18 million contract. I’m guessing his consecutive strong seasons in 2011…

Seattle Mariners superstar pitcher Felix Hernandez was called for defensive interference on a play which he narrowly avoided serious injury in a minor collision at first base during Tuesday night’s game in the Bronx against the New York Yankees.
It happened in the bottom of the fourth inning as Yankees batter Lyle Overbay hit a grounder past first base that was tracked down by Mariners second baseman Robert Andino. Hernandez and first baseman Kendrys Morales ran to first and arrived at almost the same time. As Morales settled into position at first for the putout, Hernandez jumped back from the bag but put himself in a spot between Overbay and the base. Overbay braced himself to minimize the collision with Hernandez, but his knee accidentally clipped the back of the right knee of Hernandez. Fortunately, neither Overbay or Hernandez were seriously hurt on the play.
Afterwards, Yankees manager Joe Girardi argued that Overbay couldn’t get to the base

Your browser does not support iframes. Adam Rosales was robbed of a home run after the umpires blew the review of the instant replay in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game between the Oakland A’s and Cleveland Indians. The A’s were down 4-3 with two outs in the top of the ninth. Rosales was facing Indians closer Chris Perez and took him deep to left. The ball traveled out of the park and hit the railing in front of the seats in the left field bleachers. It deflected off the railing and hit off the top of the wall, landing back in play. Rosales ran out the play and ended up with a double. Despite reviewing the play on instant replay, the umpires gave Rosales a double instead of a home run. Oakland got the next two runners on, but Seth Smith grounded out with the bases loaded to end the game. In the screenshot below, you can see that the ball hit off the iron fence: A’s pitcher Brett Anderson derided the call over Twitter shortly after the game ended: Over the fence must mean extra…
