San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell has made it clear that he wants to remain in San Diego, according to CBSSports.com. Plus, the site notes, the Padres think Bell, who will be a free agent at season’s end, “would re-sign for a discount this winter.”
That hasn’t stopped the team from answering the phone as other teams are making the final push to acquire the 33-year-old before Sunday afternoon’s non-waiver trade deadline.
The Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals are at the head of the pack, the site notes, and the Philadelphia Phillies are inquiring about Bell as well. Other Padres that are being discussed, according to CBS, are relievers Mike Adams and Chad Qualls, starting pitcher Aaron Harang, and outfielder Ryan Ludwick, who is a free agent when the season ends.
“Our guys who are being talked about are handling it well,” Padres manager Bud Black says, CBS reports. “It’s part of baseball. It’s happening in 29 other clubhouses right now, too. You can’t stop it.”
