Playing pickup basketball gave Milwaukee Brewers starter Zack Greinke a cracked rib near the start of spring training and it’s surely giving manager Ron Roenicke heartburn as well. At first, the word was that Greinke would be back only a few weeks into the season. Now Roenicke is saying it’ll be a little bit longer, according to MLB.com.
"It may be a little longer than what I thought it was going to be," Roenicke said Wednesday, the site reports. "I figured by now that he would be throwing [off a mound] a while ago. But he still felt [discomfort] in his ribs, and they didn’t want to do anything with him until that was gone."
Greinke, who came to the Brewers with great fanfare in the offseason after seven seasons and 60 wins with the Kansas City Royals, will finally throw from a mound this weekend and, if following the same process other pitchers do, throw about 10 days of bullpen sessions before beginning to face hitters, the site notes.
